DMV Inspection

Good day,

I hope to go for my DMV inspection this spring with my 65 GMC shortwide.

I have had a conversation with the mechanic who will do the inspection, about what was an option and what was standard on my truck.

Is there a place / database / center where I can search with my VIN, so I can see what was on my truck out of the factory?

I have no backup lights, no seat belts, no rear bumper, no washer fluid.

I believe most of these were options back then.

I do not want to have a discussion about safety. My plan is to eventually install seat belts, and a bumper.

If the truck did not have them, and I can document that, I do not need them for the inspection.

Thanks in advance.

Ken

That wasn't standard equipment so you should get a pass, only thing they might get you on is no bumper. I would expect a fail on that but if you get a pass then bonus.

Re: DMV Inspection

Just bring in the brochures. It shows all those items as optional. Seat belts weren't government mandated until 66, and your inspector should know that (but print something off to remind them).

Re: DMV Inspection

trucks were typically shipped without a bumper so the customer had a choice of step bumper, painted or chrome
i believe seat belts were mandatory in 68, option on prev years
(fwiw my attorney friend told me that if you added seat belts were there were none oem - and you had a wreck - a clever insurance co could deny or lessen coverage if the belts were not a federally certified installation)

but washer fluid????

Re: DMV Inspection

With this being a Canadian inspection what were the regulations in Canada for 1965? What was US mandated won't come into play.

You can download a Vehicle Information Kit from the GM Heritage Center at: https://www.gmheritagecenter.com/gm-...tion-kits.html

They are not VIN specific but they do list all of the standard equipment for a particular year/model. And they list all of the options available too. They don't appear to have one for 1965 GMC, but the 1965 Chevy truck info kit should be pretty close in terms of the standard vs. optional equipment.

Re: DMV Inspection

I think you will get a pass on the seat belts. As I recall they weren't mandatory in Canada until 1967. Got an old piece of 2 X 6 laying around for the bumper? I think they might get you on the washer.

This is helpful, I can print portions for 65 & 66 and show the difference between the years.

You are right, it should not matter where the truck came from, but more the laws at the time here.

Re: DMV Inspection

Norm, the links go nowhere, and the images you posted do not show anything about options.

Re: DMV Inspection

believe manufacturers in Cannda had to have them installed after Jan. 1, 1964 but you were not madated to use them until 1976
