Newbie with a '66 project truck - The 1947 - Present Chevrolet & GMC Truck Message Board Network

Greetings guys! First time poster here, so I'll jump right into the reason for me being here - to pick your collective bowtie brains!! I have recently started the task of restoring my fathers old truck. It is something that I have wanted to do for quite some time, but never had the space. I recently finished my new house, in which I included plenty of garage space just for this project.

The time my friends, has come.

The truck in question is a short bed '66 Chevy C10. It has the original 327, 4 speed and drivetrain. IIRC, I think the rear end was geared at 4.11. The majority of the body parts are in good shape, the front fenders are going to have to go, as will the floorboard and cab mounts. Everything else is in rather good shape, considering it has been outside for the past ten years and we used it to cut wood in for the first 18 years of my life!!

My biggest concern will be the cab mounts, for starters, can someone tell me how big of a PITA replacing those are? I'm not talking rubber bushings here, I'm talking floorboard rusted out around the brackets! You could rock the cab completly off the frame and the brackets would stay attached. If some people could give me some idea as to what I am up aginst here, I would really appreciate it!

I had to do pretty much the same thing that you are having to. To be 100% honest with you, I would not do it again. I would look at getting a new cab or buying a parts truck. It would of saved me a whole lot of time and money. If you do decide to do it, take the whole cab off and replace the floor boards in one piece. Another thing that you've got to know is that most of the replacment floor boards are not as thick of gauge steel. Good luck!

I have a '65 that has had all of these parts replaced. We took the cab off of the frame and laid it on the back section up on a trailer. This gave us access to all of the underside and mobility to take it to the sandblaster and then to install the new parts. it is important to fit them as you go instead of completely removing the old parts and then fitting them. good luck, I also had mine sprayed on the bottom surface and the new floorboard area with rhino lining. It should hold up for a very long time.

Good idea about the extra coating on the bottom. I hadn't thought of that, but I'll keep it in mind.
