Sm465 swap
I am putting a sm465 in a 1978 c20. It was a th400 that tranny is toast. My question is can I use the th400 tranny cross member and just move it forward.

Re: Sm465 swap
This is being done on the cheap. I have had the tranny for years. I have at least two pedal assembly's and rods. I have a bell housing. I have the tranny in and have it setting on the existing cross member. What I don't have for what ever reason is the bell crank.

Re: Sm465 swap
Should be easy enough to come up with the bellcrank..don't forget the pivot ball on the frame when you go looking for a donor

Re: Sm465 swap
Got a bell crank looking for the frame bracket. The one still on the frame I have doesn't look like the one I need. What I see is something called a Cth-18. The one I have got is rivetd on and is cupped where the bracket comes against it and has a fairly large through hole

Re: Sm465 swap
If the bracket on your frame is still riveted on then there's a high probability that its correct..is the ball stud still on it?

Re: Sm465 swap
I used the bracket off the salvage frame I have. It finally rained here so I was able to cut the frame around the bracket with a torch then grind the rivets off and get it apart these are on there tight. This bracket is pretty much unobtainable except maybe salvage. So here is s slightly technical drawing of this bracket it drawn off the original part on to an 8 1/2 x 11 sheet of paper. I hope this might help some one else if they wind up having to make one.[IMG][/IMG]

Re: Sm465 swap
Back when I had the 69, I had a crossmember that was simply channel steel. As I swapped various engines/trans in the truck, the CM was moved, and cut as needed (for clearance) with a a torch. I never had a problem w/ vibration or anything.
This was a working truck so today's cosmetic questions weren't an issue at the time. The point being, you can do anything you want... |

Re: Sm465 swap
Managed to score the correct cross member commonly Called the W cross member at a salvage yard I use a lot. They had a 1978 1 ton that was a 4 speed truck. It was scheduled to be crushed before dark. Got lucky on that one. Also picked the bell crank and frame bracket off it also. All for. $20. It was a good day
