4x4 to 2x4
At the risk of being yelled and screamed for cuting up a good 4x4 I am thinking of converting my 70 blazer to two wheel drive. have any of you done this? any hints or problems you ran acrossed

This has been talked about a few times on the board. What i am told is that the front crossmember from a 2 wheel drive truck will bolt right up to the frame with very few modifications. The rear is very difficult to convert to a coil spring setup , the stock 2 wheel blazers were all coil spring, but if you are happy with the leafs you can leave them alone. You will also need a tranny setup for 2 wheel or if you have an auto you can have it converted if you are going to have it rebuilt anyway. Just add the right driveshaft after that and you should be good to go.

Thanks jason what I was wondering is if Im limited to useing a frountend of a 71/72 truck "disk brakes" or if there are any orther more available doners I could use. A friend and I are installing a camaro frount end to his 53 panel but I would rather not hack my frame off Thanks Eric

I'm pretty sure the front crossmember will fit from any chevy 2 wheel truck up until the late 80's. It seems i remember reading that you have to drill a couple holes for the 73+ crossmember to mount to the frame. I was planning on doing this so i did some reading on it but i decided to just keep mine pretty much stock and maybe i'll go nuts on another one later down the road when i have some more money on tap.

Swede, This is just a thought, but I don't see why a regular truck frame couldn't be cut to fit. Maybe the cab mounts are different, but lots of long wheel bases have been converted to short, and I think you could do the same , long or short, to blazer. Think I'll take a look at the frames I have...

K5 2x4... C5?
If any of you guys are interested and want to drive to lovely Rochester, MN... I have a factory 2 wheel drive blazer frame that I would sell.
I have the complete rolling chassis, vin tag and glove box door, and a bill of sale from the salvage yard I bought it from. No title. It is a 71 or 72 (5 lug/disc brakes on front). Very solid and straight, but would need a complete restoration and 1 or 2 of the mounts replaced. Something to think about... could save you a lot of time. Chris H. |
