Lockup switch for 700r4

I am changing my 350 turbo/np208 for a 700r4/np208 and my 700r4 trans has a manual lockup switch. Instead of placing a switch on the dash I may try to use my on/off button on my B&M shifter ball-- existing mega shifter. I had previously used it on a gearvender. Has anyone done this? I could put an indicator bulb somewhere also.

Re: Lockup switch for 700r4

A switch is a switch, whether on your dash or in your shifter knob. The 700R4 has been a mod I've wanted to do for a while, my TH400 is so stout though, and fun around the city I am having a hard time giving it up for that hiway cruising 4 speed.

Should work just fine. You might want wire it through a switch on the brake pedal too, just in case for sudden stops of if you forget to unlock it when coming to a stop.

Two color LED and a couple 1k resistors and you're in business on the indicator light

Re: Lockup switch for 700r4

I had put a 700r4 in my 70 olds 442 replacing the 400 turbo --was not originl trans - now is a nice driver. I'm convinced BBC's or big olds 455's need the overdrive if highway drivers. No lockup on 442 but will be on the bbc.

Will examine using a pedal switch to break the circuit. I have some 1/2" hole lights that I may find a good place on the mega shifter housing.

Re: Lockup switch for 700r4

Here's a diagram for wiring a lockup switch to the brake pedal. This is what I plan to use on my truck.

Re: Lockup switch for 700r4

Never thot about using a relay. I found a brake/cruise switch but I will go look thru my electrical drawer now. Thanks guys. All I have left besides the lockup is to put the np208 back on, fluid, adjust TV, and remove pin in mega shifter for a 4 speed. I only have like a 2 inch lift on the 67 but I need to check my u-joint angles also.

Re: Lockup switch for 700r4

Relays are the only way to go, anything else IMO is lazy mans wiring. I like the diagram, I'd also throw a fuse in there between the 12v hotkey and the relay.

Re: Lockup switch for 700r4

700r4 install is complete. I used a 5 pin relay off the brake switch as instructed above from John's70 and DKB81 - works great. I used the shifter knob switch and a small led light in the mega shifter housing -- works well.

Changing to an OD on the bbc was a good thing, should have done sooner. With 265/70x17 with a 3.73 gear, with lockup it turns about 1350 rpms at about 50 mph. Add 200 if not locked up. My np208 speedo gears are within 2 mph of a tom tom gps at 55 mph. I run a 396/350hp comp cam and a 1650 lockup torque converter.

thanks guys
