A Little Rear End Help Please

I replaced the pinion oil seal as it was
leaking onto the pinion yoke and being
sprayed onto the under side of the bed.
Well, the problem is that the notes that I took
when I replaced the seal are LOST. Don't
how many threads were showing on the
pinion shaft before the nut was removed.
So...I'm going to have to guess to get it into
the ball park.

Could 2/3 people check their rear ends to
see how many threads are showing?
Maybe I can do an average and get it in the
ballpark.

Thanks!

The nut must be tightned down uniquely for each rear end.

The way to reset it is to tighten down the pinion nut, and then measure the torque it takes to rotate the pinion gear with an inch/pound touqe wrench. I think it is supposed to be 12-14 in/lbs, but i'm not sure. Someone else here will know for sure.

You don't want to drive it too much with the pinion nut too far off, or you have the chance of destroying your rear axle. I would limit your travel to around the yard, simply moving the truck.

well its not a matter of threads...it needs to be tightened to about 200ft. lbs..then take a punch and pop the nut in a couple places to make sure it don't back off....
place a bar in the u-joint yoke...or a pipe wrench on yoke against
the floor to keep it from turnig and tighten...
i had to buy a new torque wrench that went to 275ft lbs.to do mine
and yes its supposed to be checked on the inside for play after that...
