Question my truck wont start? Fuelpump dead?

Hey all. My truck once in a while wont start. I drove it home 600 miles with no problem & it stalled after hitting a bump in front of my house & I went out about an hour later & it started. It ran this afternoon but when I tried to start it to put it back into the garage-no go. It started for about two seconds & died & wont start. It sat for 14 years prior to my getting it & I'm THINKING that an intermittantly failing fuel pump would cause such a situation. Comments? Has anyone had a fuelpump that works & then stops & then goes again? What do you think?

When my last pump went up it started to leak.

My first guess would be something in the ignition system. I would first check for spark.

To check the fuel system, disconnect the fuel line going to the carb and stick it in a clear container, such as a pop bottle. Have someone crank the engine and see if you're getting fuel. If no fuel is pumped, next check is to see if fuel flows out the tank. Also if you have a fuel filter in line, check it for flow.

Its not the fuel pump. Gotta be a loose connection in the ignition system.

Unless you have an electric fuel pump and it has a loose connection.

usually when a fuel pump goes (mechanical), the engine will run like crap if at all. However, my truck acted about like you describe for awhile, turned out to be the fuel filter. Sitting that long, you might have jarred a little rust out of the line or something when you hit the bump and it was enough to clog the filter, then when it cools, the crap settles down, then gets picked back up agian.....wierd things happen with old trucks.....or anything with wheels......or mechanical for that matter.

update

So I was thinking about how the truck started & ran for a few seconds & died. I still figured it was fuel & an ez way to check that was to pour a spraycan cap full of gas down the carb & start it up. It ran & died in about 4 seconds. A-HA! Its either fuel pump OR a fuel filter. I unhooked the hardline at the carb & cranked it & fuel went EVERYWHERE. The previous owner cut the hardline & put an aftermarket steel filter. I unhooked it & outcame stuff that looked like fine coffee grounds! A new filter & she ran a-ok. I'm thinking that I should keep an extra one in the glovebax should I ever need to do it again & I think I will due to the krap in the filter. I'm thinking that after I get it road-legal I've gotta get that tank steam cleaned. Thanks to all you cats who replied to my post!

That rust in the gas tank can get real aggrevating. I put a new gas tank in my truck a couple years ago and just put all stainless gas lines on her this year. I was real surprised to see how much rust coating was in the gas line that runs to the pump from the tank. I guess 34 years is a long time on fuel lines and gas tanks.
