Trailer Hitch Hidden

Hidden trailer hitch project, I started off with a Reese receiver hitch that hung below the step bumper. I installed a sport bumper and it looked out of place. I wanted a hidden hitch that was behind the license plate. Originally I wanted a flip down or up plate to allow the hitch bar to slide into the receiver. After fabbing that up I found I was not able to use a drop or raised hitch ball mount only a straight hitch ball mount, change of plans, I made bracket that holds the license plate and slides into the receiver when the hitch is needed I simply remove the plate and install the hitch bar.

Re: Trailer Hitch Hidden

That IS a neat idea. Unfortunately in my state it would not be legal due to the removed tag.

Might be a legal problem, but I don't foresee one. Truck has front plate displayed and trailer plate when towing. Flip up or down plate would not be displayed either. only way around that would be a alternative plate location. I'll let you know if I have any problems. Thanks

Nice idea! if it were a legal issue you could always add a hitch.

Re: Trailer Hitch Hidden

Why not make the plate flip up? It looks to me there is room.

I made my own hitch and the plate flips down. The trailer light hookup is behind plate also

I have 2 different trailer heights that I pull occasionally one needs a 2" drop the other needs a 6" rise, I thought about an extension to get past the license plate but tongue weight might be too much on one of the trailers. I don't tow very often with this truck, Ill take my chances with the legal ramifications.
"Trouble" (the law) doesn't find me as often as it did when I was younger!

Re: Trailer Hitch Hidden

Looks cleaver, as far as the legal of it though. I had an old welding teacher who is super into the c-10's who's built a bunch of these trucks and his own hidden hitch's. He had his first few with the flip down plate and got pulled over a few times, a flip up plate is still visible in the laws eye. All states require a rear plate, a front plate is not always required. Odd's are if you're not doing anything sketchy or going across the country you'll be ok. Just thought I'd share a story of where it was in fact a problem.

Re: Trailer Hitch Hidden

I screwed a spring loaded gate hinge to the license plate mounting plate and just simply lift the plate and slide in the receiver. Pull the receiver and the plate springs down.

Re: Trailer Hitch Hidden

Flip up Tag here, from a Impala (maybe). No front tags in Florida so a removable one wouldn't work here.

With the tag lifted it's still technically visible in the laws eyes. Pointed at the ground, or not even there is is most definitely not. The Virginia State Police my welding teacher talked to all told him if it was a flip up, then you're good to go. Again, just speaking from what I know in VA.

Re: Trailer Hitch Hidden

I took the plate off to tow my trailer and got a parking ticket the very first time out. The cop just used the trailer plate number on the ticket, as I had no front plate either. He noted "no plates" on the ticket, but didn't write a fixit ticket for that.

The only time it would be up would be towing something. Really not visible from behind but convenient for the officer to read I you did get pulled over.

Re: Trailer Hitch Hidden

With mine flipped down a cop can see it from the next lane and not need to stop me. Plus the hitch is between frame rails and up higher in the plate area so it has to be flip down.
