Building a better bench.
I have been thinking about building my own bench seat for quite awhile.
The plan is to use 3/4 round tube for the frame, and bead rolled sheet metal for the base+back. Then glue over high density foam, and have covered by a professional. One issue that bugs me is that the stock bench is to narrow to sit in the center of the wheel, and I want to ride low in the truck. Also I can add a bit of side bolstering like a suspension seats. I have looked at those, but they will sit me too high. Or higher then the stock bench would of. Which would be perfect if this was a 4x4 so I can see over the sides easier. Has anyone done this with good results? I have Chevy cavalier seats lying around too. |

Re: Building a better bench.
We are going to have to build our own seats.
Go for it, and best wishes. |

Re: Building a better bench.
Not sure exactly, but based off my last install of them. Where I set them higher for a 4x4 so I could see around when off road.
If they are on a flat surface, and with out adjusters. The rear of the seat pan is like 3 inches, and the front 5. The back is normal height, and I didn't measure it. How I did it was to use the 2 factory sliders, and weld in cross bars. To which I mounted the seats. So it was it was like a bucket bench with a center console. If I wanted I could of lowered the seats 1 inch, but like I said I wanted a higher seating position. From my worn out bench my head was 2 inches higher. I and 5'9" and still had 4-5 inches of head room. |

Re: Building a better bench.
I'm in the same boat. My stock bench seat sits to high for my preference because the steering wheel is non tilt and it's a bit to close for comfort. I have a spare seat I decided to strip down and chop the legs on taking about 2" off. I also plan on adding a fold down center console but I have a stick with a hogs leg and it might work the way I want so there's going to be a bit of work to get it just right. I'm planning on reupholstering the seats to look and feel as close to factory as I can.
