1974 C10 Power Steering Pump Crooked

Hello everyone.

I bought a new power steering pump core and installed it in the original pump housing from my truck. I had the engine bay all torn up recently to paint the motor and clean up the engine bay. The truck has headers, but the previous owner accommodated the stock brackets for the power steering pump. To be honest, I don't remember if the belt was miss aligned when the engine was together. It ran briefly but I don't remember. I installed it tonight and it is much further forward then it should be, and sits crooked to one side. I tried spacing it by adding washer between the pump face and the left bracket, but that only made it worse. Are there spacers that are supposed to go in the brackets somewhere? Has anyone had this problem? It can't be the water pump shaft because the crank pulley and water pump pulley line up perfectly. Just the power steering pulley is off. Hopefully these pictures explain the problem.

Thanks

Looks like you have a press on pulley on a threaded shaft on the ps pump. i think a different pulley is needed for that style of pump ? did the old pump have a nut holding on the pulley?

on my trucks the belt goes from the crank to the power steering pump only.....does not go around the water pump......the belt for the waterpump should go from the crank to the waterpump to alternator......not sure if this helps....

Re: 1974 C10 Power Steering Pump Crooked

The pump that came off the truck had a threaded shaft with a nut as well.

El Dorado Jim, you may be right. I'll have to do some investigating on the belt placement. Something is still wrong with the pump because if I run the belt to the crank pulley instead, the belt is still misaligned. My truck has factory a/c and the A.I.R pump still intact. Not sure that makes a difference about the problem though.

Thanks

Does or did the truck have AC? On my 75 with AC and PS, the back belt goes crank-AC-PS, the middle goes crank-water pump-PS, the front goes crank-water pump-Alt.

Look like your PS pulley is from an AC equipped motor.

I think with your year truck you should have a pump with a press on pulley...I think you need to hit the wrecking yards and find the right one...

Re: 1974 C10 Power Steering Pump Crooked

from the way im seeing it, the water pump pulley doesnt even line up well with the crank pulley. unless its just the angle of the camera.

but im with El Dorado Jim i think the pump is wrong.

other than that the bracket could be bent out of wack. its so hard to figure out problems like this over the internet lol

It looks a lot closer if the belt was on the rear groove.
