Steering column.... again

Howdy, All!
I've been reading posts and three shop manuals, google searches and fiddling on my own. I'm now confused and hope this is an easy question for someone to answer.

1972 C20 automatic with a non tilt steering wheel. I'm putting things back together after someone else took it apart. I've got the steering shaft itself pulled out to fix what I think was a sagging, tired rag coupler at the steering box. I'm hoping this is why the lower bearing was not inside the shift tube at the firewall. Parts are inbound. At any rate, I figured I'd continue putting things together, make sure I have everything else.

I put the gear selector/collar in, the turn signal and it's housing is put together. I don't understand how the turn signal/housing is fixed into place, and kept from turning? Am I missing parts? What I'm not seeing is how it looks with the steering wheel pushing down onto the assembly. Does that keep it fixed in place?

Thanks!

Re: Steering column.... again

The painted upper turn signal cover is keyed to the column and will only go over it in one spot. It is clamped to the column via the aluminum piece which serves 2 purposes.
1. It is the upper support for the shift tube
2. It clamps the turn signal cover to the outer column tube.

Loosen up the turn signal screws until they are threaded in about 3 turns.
Line up the painted cover over the outer column, push it on and rotate it in place where the shift indicator is at the top and centered then tighten the 3 turn signal switch screws to lock it together.

Re: Steering column.... again

I cant tell from your picture but between the shift bowl and the turn signal aluminum piece there should be a rubber washer about 1/4" thick and tapered towards the turn signal switch with the plastic portion of it towards the shift bowl.

BTW, dump the 4 way knob you have on there. Your turn signal switch is either a replacement or from a tilt column, non tilt should have a red fixed knob.
Yours would look better with the small tulip style 4 way knob instead of that newer style 2 piece knob.

Re: Steering column.... again

Randy has it right, the three recesses circled in red will fit over protrusions in the column, then you rotate it to the right (clockwise) until it is lined up. Then tighten your screws.

Outstanding, Jim and Randy! Thanks! I'll get on out there and put it right. I was hoping it was something I missed.

While I was writing this, the rag coupler showed up, too! I'll get 'er done today!

This Board Rocks!
