Few Chevy's Use Roller or Roller Tips - Engines ?
I have installed a few Sets in My Time .. on Different Motors .
I certainly Know there are Better ones and Poor Quality Ones . I Guess it comes down to Materials & Workmanship . I took a Stock Set out of a 265 V8 - Wow were those Thin Sheet Metal I Installed a Set of those $89.00 Roller Tips - Got a Nice Vacuum Boost immediately Motor was Smoother .. I'm Currently Reviewing Comp Cam - Magnum Roller Tips 1.52's Cost More and Supposedly Higher Grade Materials and Workmen-Ship . Well this Ship - Must have Sailed - without the Boss on Broad - they were Missing there Good Morning - Inspection - Unannounced Visit ! First Up - Roller Tips arrived in Box - just Dumped Into . ( What's Up ) ? Second Up - Noticed S1 & S2 Stamping Mark - this is most likely 2 Dies , so What the Hey - Mix Parts from 2 Different Die Stamping's ( Not Good Practice ) Third : Found 2 with Burrs - see Photo's [IMG][/IMG] Sec. [IMG][/IMG] Picture May be a little Clearer : Dual Burrs in Critical Area [IMG][/IMG] |

Re: Few Chevy's Use Roller or Roller Tips - Engines ?
Now 8620 is Pretty Hard Stuff . and those Radii are Critical , so I did a little More Investigation Work - as that is pretty much I did for the second 20 Yrs.
I had Heard of Reports that some Had Experienced - Push Rod Failure ! Push Rod Galling Etc. - being - Chewed Up .. more or Less . After getting several Sets form Different Manufactures and Different Price Ranges , I Mean Stainless Steel Crower - Full Roller - Lighter then Alu. $569.00 OK so a Comparison of what's Going On is in Order .. I Never had Gotten 3 Pages of Paper on what to NOT Do - Before - Nor was I Ever Steered - so - Hard to use Their Push Rods .. Looking at the Above - Starting to see Why ! ( all the Paper Work ) OK I Took 2 pc's 1 from S1 & 1 from S2 - which Groupings came in 14 & 2 so Totally Random Mix from Factory - Not 8 & 8 ?_? I then Clean & Spun 1 Stock 1972-78 Push Rod in the Rocker Push Rod Cup Spun @ 1400 RPM's for 1 Full Min. with Oil .. 30-40 lbs of Down Force Push Rod - did get Rough . . and I didn't like what I was Seeing ! The Design of the Inner Radii is too Sharp and to Small for Stock Push Rods - making for a Sharper Leading Edge - then what should be there . A Larger Ball Tip like 3/8 = .375 would be Better Choice .. This Reminds Me of the Oil Filter Canister - that only Fits 1 Motor and Cost $19.95 Type Deal .. Most of Comp Cams Push Rods are Actually .3125 Dia. My Stock Push Rods in this Motor were .324 Dia. Like a Lot of Older Stuff .. Didn't Fit in the Bottom & didn't Fit in the Full Top Radii - which only Comp's .375 Does .. Here what I did : First I Cleaned them ans Sorted After Inspection : Prepared to Burnish A Radii of My Own I Burnished or Cut Polished this with 380 Grit Diamond Dust . Second Cleaning : Now .010 Break Lead for the Ball End to Ride - Could have even gone more . See How these Do in 6 Months .. seeing the Block was Sq. Decked .015 & Heads Milled .007 = .022 Smaller .. [IMG][/IMG] Comp Your SOOooo_ BUSTED ! Last edited by Port&PolishMan; 04-21-2017 at 11:50 PM. |

Re: Few Chevy's Use Roller or Roller Tips - Engines ?
Thanks for the heads up. It seems like manufacturers change this or that, always trying to get an angle on the market. Many folks trust the guy on the tech line to be smart about what's going on, never check for themselves. And parts coming in from overseas need extra quality control no matter what brand box they're in.

Re: Few Chevy's Use Roller or Roller Tips - Engines ?
I Talked with Tech - On Line about the Dumped in the Box - thing & the S1 & S2 Mix
He said - there NOR Suppose to come that way .. ( So He Says ) ?*? If anyone else gets them this way - Yeah , Double Check . . I'm seeing a lot of these Bigger Parts - Sellers - Will - Buy Boarder Line - Rejects . Sell Items to Unsuspecting Customers .. Other Post about - Is It Just Me - I've been Busting Company's for Years .. 1 Example out of 20 or 30 - good ones . In 2007 NGK had a Spark Plug for a Certain Motor and Claimed it was Better in all the Critical Area's - Being - Iridium . Problem was it was a 3/4 Inch Reach Plug for a 1" Deep Threaded Head . They Even Claimed that ( Tech's @ NGK ) Stated that this was A-OK - I Informed Them it By No Means - OK . Spark Plug Job was to Remove Heat from the Head . . Not to Mention the Carbon Build Up in the Threads - LOL They Insisted - They were Correct : Then NGK Quietly Pulled Plug from the Motor Listing ! That Motor was in 5 Different Cars and in 12 Different Countries .. |

Re: Few Chevy's Use Roller or Roller Tips - Engines ?
I have a set of comp cams roller tipped rockers in my engine. Bought them thirty years ago,
They are beefier than the ones you show, They have been in three engines, no problems ever. They must have near 300,000 miles on them. Problem I did have was the locking feature on the nuts wouldn't hold the adjustment. Had to get a set of ARP nuts and all is fine.

Re: Few Chevy's Use Roller or Roller Tips - Engines ?
Yes, I have seen Lockers to be a little easier Adjusting . Comp Cam Magnum 1.52
Not the 1.60 . . I have never had an Issues with Rollers - But - some Set Up's aren't right for the Push Rods .. OK _ Hot Day ( 84 Degree ) 132 miles in Later Afternoon - Hauling 2800 Lbs in Top Soil .. 1 Long Big Hill - Touch on 220 for a min. then Cooled back to 210 Temp. Mostly Help 195-200 Temp Between the Aluminum Valve Covers & Roller Tips seems to have Improved & Oil Pressure running Higher .. Roller Tips are Quite _ to Boot ! Still Going to do the Precision 180 Stat as it just gets to Dam Hot in TN .. |

Re: Few Chevy's Use Roller or Roller Tips - Engines ?
Remember, you are human. You are a victim of humidity/ temp and time. your engine is only a victim of temperature vs time.
If it's 84 degrees, that's nothing. try being here when it''s 115 outside and you have that hill to climb. You may have an airflow problem, water restriction, radiator condition, engine RPM not being in the power band when climbing that hill. hook up a tach, and make a mental note of where the temp is on an 84 degree day at certain RPM's. Also, you may need to install an oil cooler to cool the engine further. Try installing a separate trans cooler so the trans fluid going to the radiator does not help heat up the water. There's a few things that can be done to help cool. Where is your timing? try retarding the timing 2 degrees. Synthetic oil or synthetic blend drops temp about 15 degrees. How many fan blades? clutch fan or direct drive? where is the shroud placed in regards to the fan tips? Do u have a coolant recovery tank? If not, you may have a big air bubble in your radiator tank instead of filling it full of coolant If direcct drive, is there a fan spacer? brass/ copper radiator or aluminum? do u have a bug screen for your radiator? (catches small seeds and tiny bugs) What kind of pan do u have? is it steel or aluminum? How many quarts? How close is your exhaust to either the pan or the oil filter? What oil filter are you running? the tall oil filter holds another half quart of oil Have yhou checked your fuel filter lately? a restricted filter leans out the engine and makes it hot It all comes back to details. The more details you address, the less trouble you have.

Re: Few Chevy's Use Roller or Roller Tips - Engines ?
Nice List - I've address many of those Details .
I had Hit Temps of 215 & 220 in Light Traffic on 75 Degree Day .. I was mentioning the Temps on a Long Run and Hauling Load - After - Tweaks High Flow & Long Filters are all I'll Run .. I Added some Lucas with the Zinc Additive Pint to last Filter Change .. Roller Tips seemed to help .. Alu. Valve Covers .. 180 Stat is on the List . Possibly 6-7 Qt. Alu Oil Pan later on . . Currently Doing a Large Hedge Row - with - Living Trees & Bushes . . I Like the Bug Screen _ Idea ! |

Re: Few Chevy's Use Roller or Roller Tips - Engines ?
Well, you get the idea, it could be something simple that you haven't looked at yet. for the summer, I had to tie my electric fan to the brake light switch so it comes on before I even stop, when I start going again, I release the brake pedal, and the fan stops running. If I need it, I have a bypass switch, and I can leave it on while driving.
