Tremec TKO-500 vs TKO-600

I think I'm going with a kit from Hurst Driveline. For someone who actually knows and is not guessing... Why would anyone get the 500 if the 600 is the same price?

I just answered my own question. The ratios are lower on the 500.

It's the torque rating. 500 vs 600 ft lbs.

That was all I noticed at first and that's why I wondered who would ever buy the 500 for the same price as the 600.

Re: Tremec TKO-500 vs TKO-600

I got mine from American Powertrain, but when I discussed the differences with them the conclusion was that with my 3.73 rear the TKO 500 1st gear would be nearly useless. Like roll 10 feet and shift to 2nd. That was a few years ago and at the time the 500 was like $200 less than the 600, and I'm well within the torque range for the $500.

I got the wide ratio TKO 600, and its nice, but I should have (and may someday) went with a 4.10 rear. The overdrive pretty much lugs until you get to 65 mph, so I'm in 4th all the time unless I'm on a highway.

The other option I should have considered was the close ration TKO 600, which probably would have been a little better with my 3.73's and 29 inch tires.

I have a tko-600 behind my 496. Also have 3.73s out back. I can lug down to like 13-1400 rpms in OD. Probably best mod I ever did to my truck

Re: Tremec TKO-500 vs TKO-600

I have both. I've ran the TKO 500 behind a sbc and bbc in a couple different trucks, and the TKO600 is what I have for my BB now. I've used TKO's since 2004, in both hot rods & DD's. FWIW, a tko600 w/4.10's (2.87 x 4.10 = 11.76 SLR) will be the close to the same as a tko 500 w/3.73's (3.27 x 3.73 = 12.19 SLR) Anyway, the 500 is more for people that already had a higher geared rearend and still wanted OD, like 3.55 and up without having to change to lower rearend gears. One of the trucks I had the TKO500/sbc in one was part work truck/part hot rod and it had 3.73's - I used it to pull with, sometimes up to 7000#, no problem - the lower first gear was great. It's definitely not like an SM465 low gear or anything. I kinda liked it, you could almost idle off the clutch in 1st and roll out, and it would get 4200# out of the hole pretty well when you got into it.

Re: Tremec TKO-500 vs TKO-600

I have a couple of TKO-600s. One in a fullsize car with 4.10s and one in a Camaro with a similar (but different ratio that I can't remember at the moment).

I think 4.10 with overdrive around .67 is the sweet spot.

I was just looking at the ratios in the automatic Corvtte: 2.56 gears plus .67 overdrive yields a 1.71:1 final drive! That's steep. Or shallow, or whichever way it works.

I've got a 1966 K14 Burb with a bench seat and 4 speed and want to swap in a TKO600 5 speed tranny. I have a 327 and have a divorced transfer case. My question is: what position should the shifter be in? Can the 4WD shifter knob remain in the same stock position or does the new bigger TKO 600 require the 4WD shifter to be repositioned? I'm looking for a stock look inside the cab. If anyone has done this swap, I'd like to see pics inside the cab of the floor area. Thanks!
