Frame paint decisions...

What are you guys using for frame paint,

I have heard these have been used:
POR-15, and similar,
Regular enamel paint,
Undercoating,
Bedliner



What sheen is best?
Gloss, semi gloss, flat or textured?

My choice was POR 15 with its associated top coat. Worked out strong and durable for me. I also used it on the underside of both front inner fenders and rear wheel housings.

2). My front inner fenders are epoxy primed, would POR 15 work well coating that?

Did you use hi gloss or semi gloss?

I built a street rod truck a few years ago and used Massey Ferguson paint for the frame. I painted the truck torch red and the MF matched it pretty well. Bought it at local Tractor Supply for around $7 per quart. Can spray or brush on. They also have it spray cans too. Held up pretty well.

Tractor paint = rustoleum with some hardner used it on my inner fenders and such still looks good after 7 yrs.

Yes I brushed it on. It flattened out well. I made sure that all my metal surfaces were prepped per their instructions so I have no experience in painting over any other coating.

For a top coat I used the semi glass. Most of it was sprayed but I also used some of the brush on topcoat.

I powdercoated mine.

It always makes me think of my 2+2 (in this month's Hemming's Muscle Machines, btw!) which was restored at Musclecar Restoration in WI. They go all out... they putty, fill, and block sand the frame. It looks like it was laser cut and welded, a fresh brand new stamping.

My truck isn't bad because it was never very rusty, so it's not pitted, but the Pontiac was. It would never have occurred to me to visually "restore" the frame stamping! But it looks swanky... it's "over-restoration" at its finest, but looks amazing.

I'm getting ready to paint my frame with chassis saver. Supposed to be pretty good stuff.

I shot chassis saver on my Impala frame seems to be pretty durable I would use it again for sure. I would use the tractor paint again also ,for a weekend warrior or everyday cruiser most economical .

Tractor paint? Never heard of it, but will research it locally. $7/ qt is a lot cheaper than POR15.

Wow that's crazy! I just paid less than 80 for a gallon down here.

I paid $27 a quart for chassis saver used 2 , tractor paint I got at tractor supply about $15 a quart about the same as rustoleum paint in the quart can.

Van Sickle is what TSC sells and if you use the hardener it is tough as nails. Flows out good, but is single stage and a little harder to paint as far as orange peel and runs go. Nothing you can't eliminate by setting up your gun correctly.

Zero Rust is what I’ve heard is good. It can be thinned out and It’s store nicely too unlike por15 which is one and done once you crack a can.

Brush or roller on.

Rustoleum low gloss black farm implement paint in brush on quarts and spray cans to get full coverage. It was very time consuming, as I left the cab on and the rear suspension on but it looks good and has held up well. It also cost me less than $100 for 3 full coats.

I have used por15 and KBS systems. In my experience KBS is far better than por15 and por15 is way overpriced for what it is.

Por15 is somewhat known to have major adhesion issues if its fairly clean metal or in other mysterious circumstances. Either way both are single part systems. The best will always be 2 part.

AND I still find myself shocked at those who would spend grueling hours prepping a frame to put a $15/quart rustoleum on it (even with hardener). Mind boggling concept. If you are going to go the cheap way out, just douse the thing with oshpo and then rattle can it, you will have better lasting results.

No one talks about the fade and rust through cheap paint *cough* rustoleum leaves you with in a ~1-2 yr time frame. Cut that by 1/4 if you actually drive it and typical road gravel etc get thrown into it. Even a polished turd will shine for a little while...........

Spend ~150 more bucks and get a two part system, two full wet coats of sealer then paint it with your $15/gal stuff. In 15 years your frame will look better than the rustoleum job that's a year old.

Sorry if it seems like a rant but you get what you pay for, paint is by far the one of the worst exceptions you could make.

Oh and..... adding the so called 'hardeners' to cheapo paints is not the equivalent to adding an activator to a two part system, not even close.
