Anyone Use This Steering Wheel?

Hello, My 70 GMC came with a rather cheezy Grant steering wheel that I don't care for.
I have this wheel on hand and may run it for a while. Came off my old 94 Suburban.
Was just wondering if anyone here has one of these wheels and how everything worked out?
Thanks Greg

Re: Anyone Use This Steering Wheel?

Yes, those are a very popular swap for these trucks. I had one in my '71 wrecker and others in the past

Re: Anyone Use This Steering Wheel?

Did you have any problems getting the horn to work with this wheel?

That horn contact should fit right in your cancel cam and work just fine.

The horn contact ring is different for that wheel and wont fit a truck with a straight column, you will have to strip that wire down and put it in place of the original rod poking out to get it to make contact. If you have a tilt wheel you can get a horn contact from a donor car that will drop right in, such as the horn contact that came off the column that wheel came from.

Re: Anyone Use This Steering Wheel?

My column is not a tilt, it also is not in great shape inside.
Someone has done some repair work on the turn signal mechanism, and the signals do not cancel after a turn. Also the hazard switch is gone.
The horn was inop. with the grant wheel and was not even hooked up, the little rod that goes in the hole was broken in 2, I managed to pick all the pieces out and the 94 spring and wire feed down there but the black collar does not.
I may end up trying to find a 4 spd. column. Are all the GMC columns tan from the factory?
Thanks for the replies, Greg

The turn signal don't cancel because there are 2 springs in there on the turn signal cam which turns them off when the horn contact contacts the turn signal cam, your springs are probably broken. Those springs should be available.
The horn should work, leave the spring in the hole for the horn because it makes the electrical contact, push the wire in and fashion something to hold in in there such as 4-5 toothpicks pushed in the hole with glue on them...just an idea.

The steering columns are color keyed to the vinyl interior color except for white and then the column and dash pad are tan.
Red vinyl, red column
Blue vinyl, blue column
Etc... all tilts are black column no matter the interior color.

Re: Anyone Use This Steering Wheel?

Good info and I'll add, the steering wheels always match the column.

Often the signal cam will crack from the driver holding it from clicking off due to a wondering worn front end. The emergency button is part of the turn signal cam assembly and won't "click" in when cam is cracked

Re: Anyone Use This Steering Wheel?

I will add too....just rebuild the column you have, turn signal switch is available for about $30 new, probably made in china but will get the job done. Very easy to change too and while your changing it lube the upper bearing and if ambitious remove the center shaft with the column installed and lube the lower bearing or replace, the do wear. That bearing is about $30, you would then have a nice working column.

Re: Anyone Use This Steering Wheel?

I had not thought of fixing the innards on my column, but that is a good idea.
I actually have a Nephew who is a Mr. Goodwrench and I know he is a whiz on columns.
Here are a couple of pics of the mess.

Re: Anyone Use This Steering Wheel?

You can see the repair with small screws on the turn signal parts.
Any other issues anyone can see feel free to tell me!

Thanks Greg

Re: Anyone Use This Steering Wheel?

What cheezy Grant wheel did you have? I personally don't like those late model Chevy wheels on anything but a late model.
