Suggested Freight Carriers for Shipping Rear End Assy
Hi All,
Been absent from the forum for a while, I've been working too many hours which has resulted in not too much "me and my truck" time. I think it's called "life" and having the right (?) priorities! Anyhow, I'm needing to ship the rear end for a "refreshening", from San Diego to Denver (about 1100 miles). I've just about got it attached to a standard 48"x40" non-enclosed pallet. The total shipping weight is 280 lbs. From the research I've done, it looks like it should ship as Class 70 and NMFC Code 19180 for "rear end assembly - used auto parts". The shipping quotes have been all over the place with the least expensive at $440 (which still seems to me to be too much for residential/lift gate pick-up) and the most expensive at over $1300. Have shipping costs really gone up that much . . . wow! Does anyone have any suggestions for good and reliable shippers, from the southwest? Thanks very much in advance for all replies. 454Dave

What you need is a 'freight broker'. Don't go straight to one of the trucking companies. I sounds like you are getting quoted full list price with no discounts.
I currently use Coyote...started using some freight broker that got bought out by coyote and then then they(coyote) got bought out and bought out again by UPS.... coyote.com I would not hesitate to say you are a business shipping it for business purposes... |

I shipped a transmission with Fastenal, 400 miles ....60.00. It was dropped off at there store, I picked it up at my store. Strapped to a pallet...Took about a week. Do not know if that is an option in your area...

I have to ask why ? what axle "refreshening " could possibly require you to ship it 1100 miles ? Have all the mechanics moved out of southern Ca ?

I used UShip. It was about $200 and about 1000 miles for my rear end. Some Average Joe picked it up in his Sprinter van, it worked out great.

I too had a very good experience with Fastenal. They like it if your item is fastened to a pallet (which it seems you have already done). You start by going to the Fastenal website and they will give you a quote. As long as you are not in a rush they provide a good service at a reasonable cost mainly because they are just shipping your stuff in trucks that would otherwise not be full of their stuff.

Re: Suggested Freight Carriers for Shipping Rear End Assy
Thanks very much for all of the replies. I ended up disassembling the rear end and shipped it in 3 cardboard box-within-a-boxes for less than $250. It arrived at its destination in 3 days.
I'm having some special work done on it and wanted the original manufacturer (Mark Williams) to perform the work.
