Disc brakes.

Making the truck ride softer, replace the springs and shocks( current shocks are probably bad)

Make sure you get a brake kit that is compatible with a drum brake spindle OR you change out the spindle to one made for disk brakes. Don't want to end up with a brake kit you cant return!
I agree with Clyde65, a good set of shocks would do wonders. Are you planning on keeping the truck at its stock ride height?

Re: 66 suspension short bed

The plan is to lower the truck.I am going to use a newer suspension(73-87) with 2 1/2 inch lowering spindels and 1 inch on coils.Besides 73 through 87 is there a newer chevy truck I can use? how about off a full size 5 lug Chevy Van? Thanks for the advice

Re: 66 suspension short bed

A junk yard investigation with a tape measure showed me that vans have a wider track width but I don't know what make it that way.

Re: 66 suspension short bed

The increased track width of the full sized vans is in the crossmember. The control arms are the same length as a C10 truck, but an '85 G20 van has different lower control arm shafts than a C10. I do not know how many years or applications use those LCA shafts.
