Radiator cap for v-6

Does the v-6 need a different radiator cap from the v-8's? Min wants to puke out quite a bit of antifreeze. It appears the neck on the radiator is long enough that my cap has no spring compression when tightened down. Just wondered if anyone has been through this?

No, my '67 351 V-6 uses the same radiator as a '68 396 with AC. Same 13 lbs. radiator ca p most any '67 uses. Do you have some kind of custom radiator?

This radiator is the original, just cap has been changed. If you top it off it will throw it out the overflow tube. Doesn't get hot although. I will do some measuring with with my micrometer and see how deep it is verses the distance it takes to compress the cap spring.

Do you have an overflow tank or coolant recovery system?
If not then don't keep filling the rad up. Let the level stabilize where it doesn't puke any coolant out.

Does the coolent end up about two inches down in the tank after it pukes and cools down? If it does that's where it wants to be.

Why not add a recovery tank? Cheap & easy, and there's the benefit of an always-full radiator. You'll need a closed-system radiator cap, also inexpensive.

Thanks Mike, like I said, it never seems to get hot and yes about 2 inches down. I may do the recovery system. Been driving this old truck for almost 50 years. Grandpa bought it new, I was 13 or 14 when it first came home.

That brought a smile to my face. I bought my '72 in 1977, so I've been driving it for 40 years now. Showing its age but it still gets the job done.

Re: Radiator cap for v-6

No overflow tank on mine, coolant level about 1.5" down from the top. Sounds like you don't have a problem!
