Re: Is this here a spark arrestor?
Ah, thank you. Do these trucks (71) use spark arrestors? Apparently mine "doesn't".

Re: Is this here a spark arrestor?
They do not. Hard to get a carb fire with factory air cleaner on tight.

Re: Is this here a spark arrestor?
Thanks Terry. Nice to know what things are and how they work.
On another note, shouldn't there be two circular gaskets, one on both sides of the spacer? The one that lays on the carb. is fiber. I suspect the one on top of the spacer is supposed to be rubber, which mine was missing. I think they're called air cleaner gaskets.

Re: Is this here a spark arrestor?
If you drive your truck to real auto parts store. Not a autozone type. Take your adaptor in and they will hook you up. There are different sizes. A old school auto parts dig old stuff.

Re: Is this here a spark arrestor?
Yeah, I've never seen other than the paper gaskets in both locations. I've seen a lot of cases where the gaskets were missing, too.

Re: Is this here a spark arrestor?
Yeah, Napa is generally pretty good for that. Where I live they're the only old school survivor. Gaskets are approx. 5" ID, and 5.1/2" OD. Close enough is online as well. The truck is in no condition to drive anyway. Tearing her down. Very cool, learned how to mount (technically dismount) a carb. today. Simple. Go figure, four 5/16" bolts on a carb plate lifts a big block. Hopefully I'll be there soon, carb. plate or otherwise.

Re: Is this here a spark arrestor?
Actually, that IS what GM referred to as a "flame arrestor" in the 1969 service manuals and as an "arrestor assembly" in the 1972 service manuals.
Here is a link to the patent for the number embossed on mine and a picture showing the internal structure. Patent 3287094 (note that it's called a flame arrestor here also): https://www.google.com/patents/US3287094 EDIT: Here's a thread where we discussed it ad nauseam. http://67-72chevytrucks.com/vboard/s...d.php?t=707424 Last edited by FirstOwner69; 05-07-2017 at 11:37 PM. |

Re: Is this here a spark arrestor?
Ha! Your arrestor is cleaner than mine.

Re: Is this here a spark arrestor?
Some looked more like this.
In 2013, chewychevy67 posted this. "I have these 2. The smaller mouth one is from a 68-72 v8 and the larger mouth is from a 67 v8 and 67 and up line 6 with optional closed pos vent" http://67-72chevytrucks.com/vboard/s...er#post5805555

Re: Is this here a spark arrestor?
OK, I have the same elbow on my truck, but I don't see a screen inside that elbow. I see that there are some true flame arrestors in this thread, but unless you have a screen in the elbow that goes into the valve cover, it is only an elbow. I've known this truck since 1981, and have never seen that screen in it. I know that flame arrestors are common, my mid-'60s cars came so equipped, in the PCV system.
In looking at post #12, it appears that I maybe should have a screen in there. Any other people have one in there?

Re: Is this here a spark arrestor?
I think it is more than a screen, it has depth to it. I have one of the fat ones RichardJ shows us in the pictures above.

Re: Is this here a spark arrestor?
What RichardJ posted appears to be a true "flame arrestor", as in it has a part number (?) Those are made with a short section of sheet metal bent at an angle, inside. If it is just an elbow (not the fat one), I've not seen one with even a screen, as was posted by 71CHEVYSHORTBED402. So, I'm curious what the answer will be. So far I'm just saying what I've seen in the past.

Re: Is this here a spark arrestor?
The image in the original post was removed. In a nutshell I was looking for the hose and flame arrestor for the crankcase. From the hose is a single unit flame arrestor. Mel is setting me up with one.
