Cool 4L60e toast?

OK, so Sunday night I let my cousin drive and this idiot misses a turn and backs up from the red light so fast the truck shudders and almost died, I'm yelling something is coming so he throws it into drive and hauls a$$. We pull over, I take over and it rides fine all the way home.

Next morning I back out to the street, it wants to kill, it is literally on E so I call for gas and it does the same thing. I drop the transmission pan and the transmission fluid smells like a burning clutch on a standard. I snapped some photos and the pan has a lot of gold and black clunks!

The fluid is extremely dark, the truck also shudders and wants to kill in P,R,N,D.
So what I'm wondering is if I can possibly just change the filter and fluid to band aid this issue.
I could buy a junkyard transmission but I'm in New Orleans and I think there's a pretty good chance if I found one, it probably flooded last year.

As always many thanks for your advice/experience it is greatly appreciated!!!!

Re: 4L60e toast?

The gold your seeing is probably a bushing gone out.. chunks in a pan aren't good. You will see some clutch material, but sounds like your not so fortunate. I think a filter and fluid change is a waste of money, personally.

Re: 4L60e toast?

OK, so a transmission can cause a vehicle to shudder?
It would kill if I took my foot from the gas. Doesn't hesitate to start or anything.

Just trying to make sure because I'm thinking about ordering a rebuild kit from eBay...

Was the fluid dark before your cousin drove it? It must have been on it's way out anyway.

Re: 4L60e toast?

1- A rebuild at a reputable shop should be cheaper that buying new unless you can find junkyard score.

2- I wouldn't trust anything in New Orleans. Chances are everything with a good price has water damage!!

3- Never let your cousin behind the wheel of your ride again!

Unhappy Re: 4L60e toast?

May is off to a bad start, on the 2nd I hurt my back and leg at work, new job unpaid time off!

4th my dad has a minor heart attack, he has heart failure and diabetes on top of battling cancer! His insurance is giving hell! I've been helping him pay for some of his meds, going broke it's a damn disgrace how much medicine cost these days. I've never seen anyone fight so hard!

6th lost my drivers license maybe it was stolen, now no transportation to get to Texas for a new one, no picture of the audit number to order another online! Can't rent a car with a debit card! I cut all my credit cards up when I paid them off!

Murphy's Law!
