Step Bumper Rubber Trim

Howdy,

I've been lurking in the shadows here for a couple of years, and I've used this site as a great source of inspiration and information while resurrecting my '65. However, I've finally managed a question that I haven't been able to track down the answer to in any FAQ or search:

I'm wondering if anyone knows a source for the rubber trim/seal/extrusion that rides between my step bumper and the body. I'm getting ready to pull and POR15 my step bumper, and would like to replace the rubber while I'm at it. It seems to me that I saw a roll of this rubber seal in a catalogue or on a website in the past, but I've had no luck finding it lately. I did find a thread where fender welting was used, but if someone is still making the original profile, that would be preferable. Here's a picture for reference:

Thanks in advance!

That must have been owner added, I can't see why someone would put rubber there because it could trap moisture. Just because I haven't seen it doesn't mean anything really. Good luck!

Re: Step Bumper Rubber Trim

Thanks for the responses,

Clyde, you're right about the moisture. Even though my '65 has spent much of it's life in the "desert", the rubber has most definitely contributed to surface rust on the body. I'm guessing that the rubber came with the bumper from the American Bumper Co. These step bumpers were all dealer installed, no?

Rocknrod, thanks for the link. I think that's what was sticking in my memory as having seen it still available. I'll have to hit up Steele. Too bad I didn't order it when I did my vent windows.

Cheers

Re: Step Bumper Rubber Trim

I have a tank bumper on my 64 Fleetside and it had that same old rotten flap rubber strips on it too. It pitted the top of the thick gauge diamond plate and the sides of the bed pretty good by the time I obtained the truck. I took that stuff off and hucked it far away. I never replaced it with anything since I repainted the truck and it looks cleaner IMO. I thought about using the black vinyl step fender welt but the fit is so tight that I decided against using it. Ill get a pic soon.
