1978 P10 Steering

I am in the process of converting from manual transmission to automatic. I installed a new CPP steering column. I am trying to hook up the intermediate shaft between the column and steering box. If I hook the shaft up before mounting the column it will not let me mount it at the floor board. Is the intermediate shaft supposed to adjust in size? I think it needs to be a hair longer.
Thanks
Travis
