Question 4x4 top rad hose

does anyone know if the factory top rad hose for the 67-72 4x4 has a metal middle section, like a three piece hose?

I put in a one-piece rubber hose because the metal portion had a lot of rust and pitting.

I have the one peice rubber, and am fine with that, I was just wondering if it was true that they came with that metal middle section. next question why? why did make a rad hose like that?
