Phone company truck

I picked up this truck today for my C20 project. 1971 C20 it turned out to be really complete and very interesting. The options are obviously specific for the company especially the Oilbath air cleaner. I really just bought it for the utility bed which is in great shape. The dealer bought it from a local auction and thought the primer, bondo and wheels were great additions. I got there just in time.

The phone and electronics are cool with a huge GE inverter under the passenger side seat and a dash radio phone.

The guy that bought it for Northwest Louisiana Phone Co. Inc. was the driver/operator of this unit. He kept detailed records. Insurance, registrations, and protect-o-plate in the glove box. It was in the fleet until 2006.

It's not worth a ton of money, but very interesting.

Oilbath Air Cleaner pic. It's shiny, but the picture doesn't show the runs and dirt.

Too bad they primed it. The original livery would have been cool to have.

Re: Phone company truck

That's an awesome truck. I have a crazy weakness for old work trucks that have survived there work days. That's a good find. If you are parting it out I know for sure the tow hooks will sell fast and there is a guy looking for a Eaton no spin. Center section if it's 4.10 gear. Just to give you a heads up. But you need to be a subscribing member to sell on the parts section. Best money you will spend especially when you find what those parts are worth.

I tried to buy it before hand and it had a cool look to it.

The primer will only make more work on the bed for me. I think I'm just going to sand blast it and go from there.

I'm trying to get my old account merged with this one. I have been a member for years. And yes it is well worth it.

It was the local supervisors truck. Gary Justice is on the registration as the assigned driver.

Re: Phone company truck

Looks like spray can primer might be easy to get it off with little lacquer thinner.

Good point. Some of it is silver spray paint.

Re: Phone company truck

Try lacquer thinner from an auto paint supply and light duty scotch brite like this http://www.tcpglobal.com/MMM-7445.ht...3#.WTS5U2jyuUk

The stuff hardware stores have isn't strong enough.

That's a cool find. I need one like that. That primer will likely wipe right off. It seems Bell used Koenig bodies on most all their trucks back then.

The down side about Louisiana trucks is rust. My BB C20 is from East Texas and rust free. Two hours to east Louisiana is not the same story. The frame and cab are rusted pretty bad for a southern truck. Not to mention it has never seen the inside of a garage.

My east Texas truck was a plumbing co. truck and this bed is perfect for it. I'm guessing it a had a similar service bed based of the height of the paint fade and wear. It was the owners truck so it was hard loaded too. Most service trucks like this just don't survive.

That's crazy!

Around here it's rare to see any utility trucks older than a GMT800. (1999+)

Re: Phone company truck

I just happened to drive by it here in the town where I work sitting in the lot where the picture was taken. It started life as a bell phone truck and at some point belonged to a tire store here locally. I'm not necessarily an AD fan but I couldn't resist stopping to check it out. The bed is in pretty good shape except for the top sheet metal. I didn't really plan on trying to buy it but the guy offered it to me for $1500; I counter offered $1000 and he took it. Now all I need is more time to get this one and a couple others going.

I've always wanted to find one a truck or just one of those old phone company beds. Love me some workin' trucks!
