Guy says my truck was his dad's

So a guy catches me in a parking lot and says his dad use to own my truck and he has been searching for 10 years. So I don't want to be a doucher and keep him from his dad's truck but I really like my truck and the current condition I don't want to end up without a truck like mine. It's a C30 1972 with a flatbed that is a dump. I got 2 grand in it plus like many nights and weekends trying to get it back on the road. Thought motor was stuck but turned out to be junk, swapped motors. My first truck I got running, installed flatbed( with saw horses, blocks and scissor jacks), got dash lights working, exterior lights working and fabricated two brackets, one for alternator and one from clutch pivot arm. It was fun but lots of work. Thing is I don't want to gouge him but don't want to screw myself. I want to help him but I also don't want to end up with something I don't want in the place of my sweet C30, it's not in bad shape but it's not in great shape. I like to ride them like I found them meaning I like the ratty look. I have been searching with little luck. Any suggestions on how you all might handle this type situation. Told him I would let him know this weekend. Couple C30s sitting in town I'm going to see if they would sell. Not just looking at the 67 - 72s but mainly like any chevys with duallies but mine was low budget and I don't have the time or budget for a two month build.

It was his dad's truck. Now, it's your truck. The $2k is one thing, but what about all that sweat equity?

Searching for it for 10 years? I'd sell it to them, and sell it high. Either they'll pay or they won't. Either way you come out- wad of cash or still the owner.

If you want to keep it, keep it. ZERO pressure to sell. And that would not be being a doucher, ha. If you MIGHT sell it one day, perhaps now is the time - it's the most you'll ever make on it most likely. Something to consider.

Was there any proof that his story holds water either than 'his word'? Seems that the con artists are really out when it comes to these trucks lately

It's your truck. You're not being a douche by not selling. It's a piece of property and you own it. I agree with the above, how do you know it was really his dads truck at one point. I also always have the old adage of "it's not for sale, but everything has a price.

get his contact info and tell him if you ever decide to sell it he gets first chance....do not ever feel obligated to sell your truck.....it is yours and they are getting hard to find, if you dont care that much about it then sell it to him, totally up to you

I would get this man to somehow prove that did was in fact his dad's truck. When I went to reclaim my dad and grandfather's old 68 truck from the new owner (see story link in profile) I was able to prove it with pictures from the past of me with the truck and an old registration. If the new owner had not agreed to sell it back to me, then I still not have it and be very unhappy. It's totally your call. But I will leave you this thought. Only HE has an actual sentimental family connection to the truck that you have, but another like it would suit you (not him) just fine. The advice a different poster gave you about having him replace it with one like it is spot-on. This way he is very happy and you are very happy.

Whether his dad really owned it is irrelevant, all our trucks belonged to someone's dad, name your price, you can't lose.

Pick a number that you're willing to take or say you've got 1st dibs when and if I do sell.

Give the number you want for it, I'm sure he's willing to pay it especially if he's been looking for 10 years. If not, just leave him your info if he changes his mind. I'd at least exchange info in case you end up finding something else you really want.

You are by no means being a douche if you don't sell it to him. If you do so happen to have a "This is the I don't want to sell it price" then you can share it with him if you choose to. If you just want to keep it then like the other guys said, take his name and number and tell him he gets first dibs if you ever decide to sell. Don't give him your number! Who knows, the story could be true. I wouldn't bother asking for proof if it was his fathers, he just might have it. That just sucks you in even further and you may wind up making a decision you'll regret.

I agree, you should feel no pressure to sell. It would be totally gracious for you to take the guy's info and offer to give him first dibs if and when you should decide to sell.
