Having (cheap) Fun w/ The Interior

Been chipping away at my son's '73 these last couple weeks and I figured I'd share some progress pics after getting inspired by Mattchu's nice interior results. Our current interior colors are lacking contrast, worn out and ready for a new look. Now keep in mind we are chipping away on this truck over the course of the next year and on a trickle budget so I'm always looking for low cost options. Heres a couple before shot as a starting point.

Re: Having (cheap) Fun w/ The Interior

My son actually liked the vintage wood grain look but since the inserts had a worn finish we decided to experiment a bit. I've always like the aluminum finish you can get for the late 70s/early 80s models but they don't offer it for our year so I figured I'd try and mimic the look.

A bit of aircraft paint stripper followed by 300 grit, then a grey scotch-brite pad and we had a close match. I'm digging the new look and we're up to $0 invested.

I also had some SEM prep and paint so we decided to black out the door panels to bring back a solid contrast look that matches the dash....ok, so I'm up to $30 in materials there.

Re: Having (cheap) Fun w/ The Interior

Next up was that gnarly looking bench seat. The seat upholstery was starting to unravel but the cushions are still in great shape so I started shopping around. Though it's mostly a mild 70-80F here in the NorCal bay area, the sun can make for some uncomfortable seats if it's black leather/vinyl. We needed to go with cloth inserts to keep the backside burns to a minimum. I took a chance and picked up a velour/vinyl upholstery kit from classic industries according to their website. I verified the correct part# before the order and yet I still got the wrong part (I got an all vinyl set). After calling them to make an exchange, they told me they don't carry the part that the website described. Oh well. Probably for the best as the quality wasn't anything special (pic#1).

Decided to shop around locally and found a ma & pa shop with loads of experience and personality so we decided to pull the trigger. Went with a black vinyl w/ a Camero sport cloth insert. Diggin the look!

Re: Having (cheap) Fun w/ The Interior

While the bench seat was out for some work my son asked if we could tackle a couple more things on our list. Since his truck has a full flowmaster exhaust system the cab is in need of some serious sound/heat attenuation. Dynamat prices itself out of the game with all the other options out there but at the same time we want something that gives similar results. After some research it was pretty obvious that our local Lowe's had a solid solution at a reasonable price so we went with Peel & Seal and covered the cab from bow to stern.

Since P&S is more a sound barrier we chose to add another aluminum laminated fibertech heat/sound barrier to add to the total effect. In the end we'll see (and will report back) but it should do the trick.

The last is an obligatory fat cat pic

That's one righteous upholstery job. Nice, tight, wrinkle free. . . not like a lot I see around my area.

I was shopping around locally today, while the CNC was running, for a full upholstery job for my '74 project. You mind my asking what the seat set you back? Things in California usually come up more affordable that the NW.

I appreciate the compliments. The guy charged us three and a half bills for the re-upholster job which included a 1/2" foam topper on the bottom and seatback. Not back considering some of the other shops around town wanted over $1k.

We're still working on a couple things while the bench is out but hope to have everything back together sometime in the next week. Will report back soon.

That's a big 10-4!! This guy was in his early 70s and had the vintage sewing machines and set up to boot. Most people would have been scared to walk into his dust old shop but I love old dudes since they've never failed to teach me something in life.

Love the look that the brushed aluminum trim on the black door panels gives. The seat look awesome too!

Thank you sir!
Things have slowed down as we are waiting on parts for this little side project. I'll update when we get off high center.

Nice. I put in an all Sony Xplod system in my old Jeep wrangler I had back in HS. Never had any issues with it and sounded good even with no top and doors and mud tires roaring down the highway lol. Where are you mounting that system? Behind the seat? By the way, that seat looks fantastic!

Re: Having (cheap) Fun w/ The Interior

Finally got the balance of parts in this week to wrap up the interior facelift. While the seat was out and the sound/heat barriers were finished, we used some time to boost the flavor in the audio department. Not much real estate behind these bench seats but I'll push the limits none the less with a 12" sub box and amps.

Since the carpet kit only covers the front portion of the cab I decided to tie together the look of the existing carpet and sub box carpeting by laying in my own carpet up the middle/back of cab.

Re: Having (cheap) Fun w/ The Interior

Taking over the dinning room table with carpet fabric reminded me of how mother used to do this like a boss, isn't as easy as it looks though. Last time I carpeted a sub box was over 20 years ago in h.s. so please cut me some slack...heh

Got everything laid out and secured, ready for installation.
