Buying a truck across the country

I know this has been asked and answered...heck Ive already done it but think I got lucky before. Im looking at a truck across the country and wondered if there are any tips on the money exchange should I pull the trigger? Before, I sent a cashiers check and seller sent title overnight and I had a shipper pick up the suburban. I took a leap of faith and it all worked out. I dont want to temp fate and this one is more $. Ill ask for a bunch of pics but more concerned with getting them paid an me actually getting the title. Ive tried search feature but cannot get it to work....thanks!

Re: Buying a truck across the country

If you put up some details of the area where you are looking a lot of times a member that lives close to where you are looking will go check out the truck and the seller. If its real good deal dont post too much info on here or you may get scooped. I had great help from a board member when i bought my last truck and he offered.

Re: Buying a truck across the country

I fully agree with Already gone on this...
I would sweeten that deal by offering some cash to anyone who is local and can help facilitate the deal.
They wouldn't have to do a lot of 'work' mostly show up to make the sure that both the truck and the guy are legit...and they make sure the truck gets on its way to storage or?
I would rather have any new purchase like this spend its first night in one of the 'truck brotherhoods' driveway than still in the sellers driveway I think.

All good

Re: Buying a truck across the country

Thanks, I'll offer more info after I get more pictures and talk with the owner more in depth. It is in Washington state and I know there are a lot of members in the PNW and a boat load of good trucks.

Re: Buying a truck across the country

Communication is everything
I've done deals all over the place and put up money every time
Before I recieved anything
I always communicate verbally over the phone
That way I get a feeling, connection with the seller
Then we text or email each other the details and specifics
So, there is some sort of documentation you are both agreeing to
It has worked for me so far without problems

I am leaving California tomorrow and going through Oregon and up into Washington

If it is somewhere it the vicinity of where I'll be, I would be willing to help you out

You can pm me your info if you want

Eric

Re: Buying a truck across the country

I recently completed a search for a 72 SWB C-10. After lots of back and forth with the sellers I flew in to look at the trucks with my own eyes and passed on six different trucks. I spent around $1500 in travel expense before I found the truck I bought but on each return trip home I was more than happy about the money I spent on the travel because it was cheap compared to the mistake I might have made otherwise. In each of those what the sellers thought were minor issues with this or that turned out to be more significant when I looked at it and it doesn't take much to burn through $1500 in a mistake on one of these or any other classic car purchase.

Good luck with your pursuit of the truck.
