How hard is it to put in a SOLID rear window? - The 1947 - Present Chevrolet & GMC Truck Message Board Network

For my birthday, a friend gave me a cherry solid back window out of his 78 C10 (he got a slider). My question is, how hard is it to put in, or should I have it put in? Also, anyone know how much it's prolly gonna cost me to HAVE it put in?

i paid $50 for the window AND the installation

but thats not gonna happen a lot.

it is not hard at all to put it. it looked very simple

Yeah, I helped him pull it out, and it came out in under 5 minutes. A friend of mine who was also there hanging out, said he'd help me put it IN my truck if i wanted...He said it's easy (just gotta use a string.)

If your friend knows how to do it with the string, let him show you. It takes a rather heavy cord (string) and windex or soapy water on the rubber. You need one person on the outside to hold the glass in place, and one on the inside to pull the string, and rubber in place....

It's a pretty straightforward install. A couple of pointers, though....
1) Use good string (I have seen people use 15 year old stuff that messes up the seal everytime it rubs across it like a saw.)

2) (Goes along w/#1) If you can afford/find a new seal, use it. The old ones tend to crack and leak later.

its one of the simplest things to do putting in and taking out a rear window i had an extra one here i woulda given away for the ride, but thre was no interest so i sorta busted it in the pail today

I have never done my own windows, I usually let a pro do it since I am too afraid to break them.

If you have insurance with free glass coverage, you could crack the window (slider) and have them install your new window or a whole new window from them for free.

Just an idea.
