Steering wheel installation question
I am replacing the aftermarket wheel in my 72 with an original wheel. I pulled off the aftermarket wheel and the adapter, and then I put the original wheel back on and screwed the center nut down. I also installed the three Phillips head screws. Is this everything needs to be done or am I missing something? Seems too easy

Re: Steering wheel installation question
Cancelling ring inside where it belongs? that's all I can think of other than making sure it is centered

Re: Steering wheel installation question
Press on the steel cup held on by the 3 screws. If the horn works put the horn button on and yer done. Chances are it won't because a part or 2 is missing.
The plastic (often light green) cancelling cam under the wheel has a contact disk and a tube that a spring and plunger go in. Also in the area is a round steel concave spring with a hole in it and 3 holes that the 3 screws go in. The plastic insulator in the pic w/ 3 holes insulates the spring and when the horn button is pressed, the spring provides the ground to blow the horn. As I recall the spring is mounted with )<-- this side up. Make any sense? Its a bit of a puzzle. Send a PM and an email address if you can't make it work. I can mock something up and send pics. You can also find a poor exploded diagram of the parts on the internet. |

Re: Steering wheel installation question
I'll pull it back off and check. Thanks for the responses. The horn didn't work before, but maybe I can get it to work now

Re: Steering wheel installation question
When I dissasembled the horn stuff, I put an X in permanent marker on the side of the steel concave spring that faces up.
Horn relays go bad. If it clicks, it's OK. Horns also burn out after 50 years.

Re: Steering wheel installation question
Using the lockdoc pic above numbering left to right. Order from top to bottom if I recall...
Wheel nut 3 screws 3 3 screw insulator 3 steel cup 2 steel disk flat spring 4 wheel cancel cam 1 The silver thing in the top left of item 1 of lockdoc's pic is a spring loaded contact. I think it can be easily pulled out and lost. For locking/keyed columns there's a lock plate, spring and split ring. If memory serves, the coil spring is under the cancelling cam, the lock plat above, and the split ring above that. I'm missing spares of some bits because I sent care packages to people on forums and don't need the parts since my horns now work on my junk vehicles. Let me know if you want bits via PM. If you have a self-serve scrapyard, this stuff spans the 60s to when airbags came. Maybe even the 50s... You can walk around and pick the bits up off the floor of ant GM vehicle after others have torn the wheel off and discarded the fun bits. Last edited by franken; 06-14-2017 at 11:51 PM. |

If memory serves me correctly, the metal cup on the '67-'68 trucks is deeper than the ones on the '69-'72 trucks. All of the other parts are the same. LockDoc
