"6,000 GROSS" stickers on WA state trucks?
My '72, which was used to haul a camper and spent its life in Washington state, came with two identical stickers, one on each lower front corner of the bed. They read "6,000 GROSS".
I have seen similar stickers on similar-era trucks in that area, and I'm wondering if anyone can provide an explanation for what their purpose was. I'm sure it had to do with road taxes, fuel taxes, commercial vehicle rules, or similar, but I am hoping for a more specific answer. Many thanks, Tom Posted via Mobile Device |

Dad had the gvw on the side of the 64 we had as a kid. It was a 920 GMC 3/4 ton and he had a camper on it. I always wondered about that too. Must have been a thing back then in more than one place.

Re: "6,000 GROSS" stickers on WA state trucks?
I have a 71 C-20 from Washington State. Purchased new by Burlington Northern Railroad, delivered from a Seattle area dealership (can't remember name right now) pickup was only used in a switch yard before being sold off at auction. It has/had 8000 GVW painted on both lower doors. State requirements for commercial vehicles......

In WA State you pay tonnage on your yearly license tabs and registration for hauling. So when you paid for tonnage the state gave you the Gross tonnage stickers.

Re: "6,000 GROSS" stickers on WA state trucks?
I found this out there in the interwebs:
"Commercial and Tonnage Vehicles General Information on Gross Weight License fees for specific use classes are based on the declared gross weight Gross weight fees are calculated in 2,000-pound increments, starting at 4,000 pounds. If the required gross weight is between increments, issue the next higher increment. Licensing agents may issue gross weight licenses for the maximum legal limit up to 105,500. The "declared gross weight" does not authorize the owner to carry a load exceeding the "maximum legal limit" for the vehicle. The declared gross weight of a towing unit does not need to include the weight of a trailer and its load if the trailer is being used for the personal, non-commercial use of the owner of the towing unit. The declared gross weight of a vehicle does not need to include the weight of any camper being carried." My stickers are degraded and have come off of the truck, and I sure wish there was a place selling reproductions. Posted via Mobile Device |

I remember seeing the Net and GVW hand lettered on truck when I was in the western states. When I came back to MD I lettered the next few trucks because I thought it was a cool touch.
