Restoration complete and on the road!

I finally got my restoration complete and I'm on the road. 3 months of a lot of work but well worth it!
I wanted to thank all here for the great advise, tips, and guidance I received. What a great resource this is.

cut frame and driveshaft to convert to a short bed.

next up was engine with new edelbrock 600 carb, intake, HEI distributor

stripped anodizing off and sanded/polish the grille. (great info from this board on that)

next up was the interior work.

re dyed all the interior panels, dash pad, steering wheel, etc. originally was a dark green

stripped out all the glass and body panels, doors, I bought new short bedsides and took all the pieces to spray
in my booth at work.

spraying exterior panels

all new body molding and badges

completed project

I used wood grain formica I had left over from a commercial cabinet project my shop built. Laminated that
over exterior glued ply. I'm a cabinet maker by trade and build custom kitchens so the materials and
machinery is at my disposal which is nice. Didn't have any 8" wide solid stock though.
Was kind of an experiment to see how it would hold up and look. time will tell.

we have a vinyl signage machine at work so rather than the task of masking off the lettering
I had them made and put them on that way. We didn't have the exact orange in stock but it's available
for now it works for me.

Re: Restoration complete and on the road!

That looks great, really nice.
You were able to get all of that done in 3 months?.....if so, that must be a new record.
Regardless....great results you have there and a nice investment as well.

All Good

I bought the truck on Jan 2 of this year.
I have a full time job as a shop foreman and build custom kitchen cabinets on the side. I did 6 kitchens 3 of which has solid surface counters I had to build between Jan and May.
Plus truck restoration when I had time here and there and full time on it the past month. Good thing was almost zero rust repair. Just one lower door skin replaced.
Guesstimate is 3 min months if I was on it full time.
Back surgery next week for herniated disc. Go figure right?
I'm taking a break after that!

Excellent work and fantastic results!!

I'll have to search for info on stripping the anodizing off the grill -- my '72 needs it desperately.

Nice work, I would like to know how you had stripped the anodizing on the aluminum front grill.

I really like that you used your original piece and made it work!

Seems like a theme here. I would like to know as well. I have been sanding the grill, once I get it all off then I will have to keep sanding to get the sanding marks out:P

Mark -

3 months is impressive. Did you happen to track your costs? It looks like most of it, if not all was done in house. Even though you had to chop it, I bet your truck is worth quite a bit now. I'm curious if you were to stay in the green on this resto. So many times on here you hear about people restoring their trucks and spending 3 to 4 times what the finished product is. Not that, that is a bad thing bc most of us look at these trucks as hobbies vs investments but just curious.

Bought the truck for $2,200. Got $6,000 in it with paint, bed sides for shortie, moldings, interior etc
Hagerty insured it for $20,000.
Wife says to leave the keys in it.

I'm still reading old threads and it sounds like quite a lot of elbow grease is required, and a buffing/polishing wheel helps finish the job. Of course I don't have one, or for that matter a shop to put it in.
One person (so far) mentioned powdercoating and I'm going to look into that as an alternative method of improving the grill's appearance.

Re: Restoration complete and on the road!

Beautiful truck!
I was curious what year it is?
I thought it was a '71 because of the two tone paint style, headlight bezels, 8-350 emblem placement, houndstooth seat, etc.
But then I saw the 69-70 style grille and hood emblem and 67-70 gas pedal.
Just curious?

It's quiet easy but just takes some time and a bit of sanding. 220 grit all the way up to 2000 wet sand. PM me and I'll describe in detail how I did it. No special tools needed.

It's a 1970. I added the elements I liked from 69-72
I believe the mirror style is '69. Little things like you mentioned that I preferred over the '70. Of course much of which I also kept from '70
