72 Custom/20 Deluxe Badge placement?

Can anyone answer this question? I have 72 fenders without pre-drilled holes for badges. I need to figure out exactly where to drill holes. I suppose I am going to have to take the fenders off to get the nuts on the backside, unless someone has a better idea. Anyone have a fender laying around that can measure from the top edge of the fender down to where the first hole should be drilled and from the door edge in?

No one can help? I would pay someone to make me a template. I just need to know where to drill holes in my fenders:P

Barrel nuts are your friend, that way you don't have to take the fender off.

Hmm.. Just looked that up on Google. interesting. Not sure I want to drill larger holes. I may try loosening the inner wells and try to get behind them.

Maybe some gorilla glue

Re: 72 Custom/20 Deluxe Badge placement?

I worked at the GM Truck plant for 33 years, when we had to replace a emblem instead of taking everything apart we used barrel nuts. The are a time saver and hold well as long as you cut some threads on brand new emblems. I just bought 50 of them because I couldn't find them in smaller qtys just so I can save some time.

Re: 72 Custom/20 Deluxe Badge placement?

Does anyone have the 1967-1972 Chevrolet Truck Factory Assembly Manual? I think there is a picture in there that tells me exactly where these badges go. I do not want to drill holes in the wrong place

I'll post you measurements tomorrow
You can get barrel nuts at large hardware stores which work good
Also if the inner fender hardware is not to rusty , you can drop it down pretty easily and get behind the fender, to find exactly where they go.
Providing they are original custom deluxe fenders

Thank you Eric, and no, I think my uncle had new fenders and new inner fenders put in when he rebuilt the truck. So there are no holes nowhere

Close enough can usually result in something looking not quite right. Recommend go with assembly manual specs, believe they have very detailed pics for badge placement. Sorry I'm not at home so can't go grab this and post it for ya dale.

I found an old post for the Scottdale badges.. I have asked several times in different threads for the assembly manual specs.. but no one has answered yet The measurements that Chevyland gave looks like the holes should be 10 inches on center and the first letter should start at 3in from doors edge.. ugh.. now you have me worried:P

Measure twice, drill once

No scottsdales in this era. You may not have received a reply to the assembly manual request because they are an absolute pain in the butt to find stuff in - it's just a pile of pages - and what you need will always be on the opposite end of the book from where you start looking. It's worth buying one. Someday, I'm gonna index one.

I will wait to drill holes till I hear or see the diagram from the assembly manual... I will see about getting one for myself

Re: 72 Custom/20 Deluxe Badge placement?

If it were me, I wouldn't worry about it to much
Really, we're talking about 40 yr. old chevy trucks here
Unless you are doing some white glove restoration or something
I doubt anyone will notice if you are 1/16" off
But that's just me

Cmon guys, the guy doesn't get any responses to a simple
emblem question. Then we scare him that he might mess up
his emblems , like it is brain surgery

For the record
I know those fenders have never been changed

Ha ha.. get em Chevyland.. and yeah the fenders on my truck have no holes, I had to drill the 8/350 emblems under the side markers.. measured it with a cigarette I think 10in to center and 3in from the door should work fine.. then I see there is 1in from center to center of the deluxe badges.. I think I will go drill

If you still need the measurements say the word. My fenders are hung up without the badges.

Re: 72 Custom/20 Deluxe Badge placement?

Just got back to the house, didn't see any follow-up on this. Sorry took so long. Included the Custom Camper emblem placement since I think you may need that also(?) The Deluxe page only shows how to anchor off the Custom Holes, didn't find the page for the Custom holes yet. 0.82 below the left justified Custom hole and then 2.81" to the right of the left Deluxe hole.

Re: 72 Custom/20 Deluxe Badge placement?

Thanks Jocko, I am glad I got the measurements from the top of the fender. That diagram would not have given me enough information. I think the CC diagram will be helpful when the badges come in. I am only .08 off my Deluxe badges.. instead of .82 I went. 1.0 I think they came out ok. Used Gorilla Glue on the posts. Gorilla glue expands as it dries, I had to keep wiping the drips, but within 2 hours it was done. It will take quite a bit to get them off, but when I am ready to paint it I can get them back off and I may take the fenders off anyways and fasten them correctly.. I appreciate all your effort!
