1986 Sierra Coverlay dash cover and dash speaker upgrade!

So I scored a Coverlay dash cover last year, finally got around to installing it not long ago. Decided to replace the shot paper factory dash speakers as well. Turns out you can shoe horn in a Pioneer 4 inch if you don't use the factory bracket. The speaker sits nice in the bracket but it raises the speaker too high and the middle tweeter will touch the dash.

I snapped pics along the way, hope this helps someone out if they ever tackle this job. So far, the coverlay dash cover is working great.

Here are some pics of me prepping the dash, clean it with Windex and I went ahead and cleared out the ratty speaker grills that were barely keeping together. Also had to cut down any cracks where the original dash material would of flared up a bit. To make sure the dash cover laid flat.

Here is the cover on. Just some silicone around the edges, and around any openings like the top defrost grills and the front opening for the dash steel looking name plate/bezel.

Getting pretty excited with how this is looking - even the wife who doesn't care much for the ol truck even commented how good it looks.

Re: 1986 Sierra Coverlay dash cover and dash speaker upgrade!

Was thinking about using the Pioneer grill over top (just laid in place for pic), decided against it for now. I was thinking of completely opening up the square-ish speaker hole and placing this grill over top. The circular opening is damn near perfect around the square opening touching all 4 corners.

For now, left it as it is. I've attached the make model of the speakers for everyone to see.

Oh and it was hot out, and even hotter in the garage, stay hydrated!

Not going to cover the head unit install, lots of threads and youtubes on that. But came out nice. Next is 6x9s for the rear corners. Not going for loud, just a stereo that's decent for a daily driver that doesn't cut out all the time lol

That turned out real nice. I don't like the speaker grill too much, but if it were recessed in the dash it might look pretty good. That is a pretty risky test to cut up that nice dash cover.

Where are ya'll getting these? I've been on the fence for awhile on how to redo my dash. Truck is a bit of a beater anyway, so can't justify one of the "nice" full replacement dashes.

You can get them right here:
http://coverlaymfg.com/lookup.html?c...sh+Board+Cover

But at that cost, the full replacement dash from Cheyenne Pickup Parts is not a bad deal at $325.95

Yikes. I put a coverlay on my Jeep about 15 years ago and it was about $75 at the time. I could see spending $100-150 on a cover, but $250 for an overlay is pretty steep.

Re: 1986 Sierra Coverlay dash cover and dash speaker upgrade!

I looked around and found the same part number as the OP has for $116 shipped after a 10% off coupon from JC Whitney (haven't ordered from them since the late 90's, so guess I'll be inundated with catalogs again LOL).

Will post up when I install it.

I was actually incredibly surprised at the fit and finish. The only thing I found, was the corner dash speaker grills of the coverlay is only half the size of the original speaker opening in the factory dash.

I just drilled several more rows of holes with a matching drill bit - but once I got it in the truck...the lines are not exactly perfect. wife said had I not pointed it out - she never would of noticed.

I was going to say - the guy I bought it from I think paid 140 CAD for it and never got around to using it, I got it for 80-100 CAD still sealed in package. I wouldn't have paid $200+ US for it.

Incredible bang for the buck.
