Vintage Air heat test !

I have been doing some "testing" of my V A on my 55 GMC this week and it sure would be nice if there was FOUR speeds on the evap fan !!!

Black truck sitting in the parking lot for 1 hour may never cool down until October !!

I thought it was 206 for a second. I was gonna say chuck a rock at the window, opening the door may cause burns

Re: Vintage Air heat test !

I left my dark green '57 truck sitting in the afternoon sun for several hours last week. (It was 109 out that afternoon)

Got in the truck and I was cooling down great within about 5 miles.
My VA unit performs unbelievable well.

It's my go-to vehicle for errands in the hot summer afternoons.

truk has va, while it's never been in 119, it's proven itself on many 100+ days
gotta keep turning it down to thaw out my toes

What is your temp at the vents? I charged mine today and using the amount recommended by VA am only getting about 54 degrees at the vents. No doors on the cab so no way to know how much it cools down the cab. Good news is I had the truck idling for probably half an hour in the garage and water temp never got above 195. Garage was 85 degrees.

Re: Vintage Air heat test !

I have Vintage Air in two of my old vehicles. One is an original and still running R112, the other is an original R134A. Both cars the air conditioning has NEVER COOLED when the outside temperature reaches 80 and higher. Have had it serviced by the V A dealer in my area. The service rep says that is the best the system will do.

Re: Vintage Air heat test !

The farthest vent from the evap on my 55 will go down to 40* after a few miles, I just wish that there was a higher fan speed or more CFM out of the three vents.
It is very hard to cool a 5 window ( all tinted and double/triple insulation on all metal in the cab) when the inside temp is 140*+
I think the V A system is a good unit but it does not work like fan speed in my 2003 GMC,
I am not comparing it to the new tech. just say'n!

It also helps if you can get the vents up as high as you can to your face so you can feel it "in your face"
I do have my systems charged by one of the best independent shops here in So Arizona and he says "that it !"
This is the hottest time on record since 1894 so stop Bi%&^*n, and it is cooling off today by at least 10* and yes that makes a difference!

Re: Vintage Air heat test !

i had a problem with mine cooling at first when i charged it with cans
found out a friend had an ac machine that got it to cool correctly

my shake out trip was the 2011 hotrod power tour
104 in cocoa beach, valdosta was 105 as was birmingham, nashville and indy
it cooled great until i hit the road at high rpm the water pump was pushing hot water past the servo valve
i stopped in knoxville and thru a bypass hose on the water pump, ac worked great untill...
it rained coming out of indy all the way to muskegon where the temps dropped to 52
needless to say we froze on the trip home to detroit that night
i fixed it by reversing the hoses, i think i'll put a shutoff valve in a water line

i had tinted the big back window, had it retinted with limo blackout after the first hrpt
the limo tint helps a lot but it makes it impossible to see out the back window at night

Re: Vintage Air heat test !

Thanks guys, my plan is to get it on the road, then if I am still not happy (well which one are you then?) I will take it to a local shop that does a lot of VA installs and services rods. One issue was that I did not kick up the rpm when installing, I am going to put the hoses back on and recheck after some higher RPM time.

Ogre - I used a simple manual valve from a ford or dodge if I remember correctly in my heater supply hose. Turned it off and on twice a year. They are set up for a cable operation similar to a manual choke so you could install a push-pull cable up under the dash somewhere to avoid lifting the hood!
