Cleaning up the original wheels for the ’68 CST/Custom Camper

Since I have some decent 8.75x16.5 tires I decided to clean up the original wheels and caps for the ’68 CST/Custom Camper before I put them on. I’m not looking for a show quality restoration here, I just want to freshen them up. The wheels are the optional 8.25x16.5 8 bolt steel wheels for the clip on style hub cap.

The first picture is one of the pictures I took in the salvage yard before I bought the truck in 2011. The next two are before and after sandblasting the rust off and the third one is painted. Last picture is one of the hubcaps cleaned, but I haven’t started painting them yet.

Looks great! Its amazing to see the transformation wheels and hubcaps take after there stripped and repainted. I would paint the hubcaps the exact same color silver as the wheels, then just add black and red trim paint ( the hard part- just take your time and mask carefully ). Here for inspiration is member Lane's '68 3/4 ton with the same 16.5" wheels, but with chrome caps of course. IMO, the factory look is very hard to beat

Thanks guys. The tires should be mounted and balanced sometime today. I am going to clean up the best hubcap and check the colors. It looks like there are three colors on it to me, Silver, Fawn, and a Red bowtie in the center.... I'll post a picture of it when I get it done.

OK, I cleaned up one of the caps. I think it is all Silver but the outside ring and the small ring around the bowtie still looks different. If those areas have been repainted they did a really good job. The Black spots are tar.....

Here is the paint scheme on an original '68 cap, however, there is a little patina from use.

I was wondering about that. I looked at the other caps this afternoon and there is black paint residue around the outside perimeter of the caps. I thought maybe someone painted the wheels black with the caps on but it was all too uniform and there was black paint on the back side of the caps.

Thanks for the picture. That is how I will paint mine.
