U joint question

Forgive my ignorance, but I've never had a u joint go out on me. I have a tapping noise coming from the rear on my '70 2wd right on take off and right before a complete stop. It gets faster with my speed and slower when I stop, but after about 5-10 mph you can't hear it anymore with the exhaust and road noise. Is the a u joint, or something else. Any other hints would be appreciated,
Thanks fellas
-Andrew

Re: U joint question

Get underneath and try to move the end of the drive shaft by hand. There should be no play or looseness.

I'll bet your U joint is the culprit and it will be pretty obvious to you.

Re: U joint question

No way to tell unless you have hands on the UJ.
Amazing you have never had one go bad. I have had them go bad because I installed them where you cannot grease them so they dry up and destroy the bearings.

Re: U joint question

Well I think I spoke too soon, I got it up on blocks and found the carrier bearing just a spinning. On to the drove shaft shop.
