My 1951 3800 stays parked outside so was planning to add a locking gas cap to the in-cab tank. Anyone have a problem with rain water leaking into the lock mechanism and down into the fuel tank? Would a pivoting cover over the lock mechanism help?

The pivoting cover might look nicer but I don't think you would have enough rain water get in to write home about if any. I had a locking cap on one of my trucks with the in cab tank for years to cut down on supplying the neighbor kid with gas for his dirt bike. Or at least my gas mileage improved considerably when I put the locking cap on it.

Make sure you get a vented cap though or the truck will stall out a ways down the road from the house.

Thanks mr48. Last winter there was NO WHERE water didn't get in to the house, the car, everywhere, so I've gotten pretty concerned about leakage.

The ones with the cover over the lock cylinder look nicer anyhow. More expensive but a lot nicer looking.

I'm not sure if Jesse ever got one or not. I haven't bought one as it would be another box on the shelf with all the other boxes on the shelf waiting to be opened and have the item put on the truck.

When I first built the 48 in 1973 I had a problem with gas caps being stolen and bought one of the parts house locking caps for it. It was my 77 C10 that I had the gas theft problem with though. A kid down the street got a mini bike and for a while I was probably supplying all of his gas until I bought a locking cap after seeing signs that someone had been siphoning the gas.

I installed one on my green turd back when people were siphoning gas back during the scary days. Worked just fine but it just added another key to my key ring. I finally got over it and re-installed an original non locking cap. Yeah baby!

Now the retired locking cap resides in my box of retired truck parts.

Got this $10 one 6 years ago, and its been good so far.... 30 bucks is alota moola for a gas cap!

My ongoing truck projects: 48 Chev 3100 that will run a 292 Six. 71 GMC 2500 that is getting a Cad 500 transplant. 77 C 30 dualie, 454, 4 speed with a 10 foot flatbed and hoist. It does the heavy work and hauls the projects around.
