Anybody ever shipped glass???

I'm looking for some ideas from those who have shipped glass before. I'm wondering what the best way to package a side window would be? I've got a spare window that needs to get to virginia for my dads 72 K20..

I have not shipped glass but I have shipped instruments that I have built, mostly ukuleles I would find a box about 3" bigger all the way around and line the box with 1" ridged insulation then add the ukulele in a case and fill with packing peanuts. for a side window I think I would do the same thing. find a box about 4" x 24" x 24" (just guessing) and then line with 1" ridged insulation then window wrapped in bubble wrap, any space left I would fill with either more bubble wrap or packing peanuts.
Before you get the box and materials I would figure out how big the box would be, and how heavy and see what it will cost to ship, then find out how much a new window is and see if shipping is worth the hassle and risk.

I’ve had glass shipped in well fitting cardboard (from the glass cutter) that arrived fine.

My preference is building a double wall cardboard or 1/4” plywood box (2 pieces of 1/4” ply, separated with 1”x1” stock along the edges. Place the glass in a trash bag or wrap with seran wrap (important, foam sticks to everything!). Fill the void with expanding foam from a spray can.

This adds a little weight, but gives piece of mind.

The side glass is tempered. It's pretty tough. Glass manufacturers ship them in cardboard. Just make sure the edges are protected - that's where tempered glass is weakest.

Expanded foam is a great idea; I have used cut up hunks of seat cushion foam inside a cardboard box (for transport, not shipping, but same idea).

I shipped an Eldorado side window once. Made a wooden box out of 2x4s and plywood. I packed it with rags, but if I did it today I would just wrap the window in plastic wrap and shoot it with a can of expanding foam. I would probably use 1x4s to save weight as well. Can't say it worked for sure though, UPS lost it and had to pay.

Despite asking around at all the glass shops around here, no one could get me a decent tinted windshield. So I ended up ordering one. From Oregon.

I can't really fault the vendor. The package was so big, it came by freight truck. There was pipe-type insulation around the edges, and three layers of bubble wrap. All inside a cardboard box.

I took a quick look at it when it got dropped off, but didn't check the edges because I assumed the insulation did the trick. When I finally went to install the windshield, I found the chip in the upper corner. What to do? Oh well, the chip is hidden by the gasket, and didn't propagate during install, so there it is...
