Pic Request for factory two tone paint combo (RPO 65L)

Have found only a small handful of low-res or long-distance ref pics on some of the two-tone threads herein - please post an RPO 65L (65 Buckskin/75Mahogany) original paint truck if you can please. Thanks!

Which paint scheme? (ie, ZY2, ZY3, ZY4, ZY5, ZY6).

Also - "L" = lower, or secondary paint color. "U" is upper/Primary color.

Do you want the Mahogany to be the primary color, with the Buckskin as the secondary or inset color?

Re: Pic Request for factory two tone paint combo (RPO 65L)

Thanks Keith, ZY3 - Buckskin pri with Mahogany inset. Would roof also be Mahogany in addition to the inset on ZY3?
EDIT: Disregard, I see that would be a Special two tone, so inset only.

Ok - that would actually be 65U with 72L, then.

ZY3 is primary color up top and secondary color down low (roof is primary color), so I don't think we are quite on the same page just yet.

Inset is ZY5.

What model year ranges are you looking at?

Re: Pic Request for factory two tone paint combo (RPO 65L)

1977. I have a 76 data book that I was referencing (same two tone codes as 77 I believe) and ZY3 was Special Two Tone - i.e. one main body color and the inset only being the 2nd color (so, roof in main body color, rather than inset color).

My assumption, based on interior & eng compartment paint is that the truck was originally main body buckskin with a mahogany inset - but the 65"L" from the SPID has me a little confused. The description matches what I would assume are pri/sec colors, but the L seems to indicate it would have had a Buckskin inset on a Mahogany truck(?)

It's funny, the truck looks MUCH more like Santa Fe Tan than Buckskin. Not going to buy this thing, but doing a little research -it would have been a gem when new. Now it's repainted, maybe even more than I thought it was, and much of its originality mechanically/interior is long gone.

Re: Pic Request for factory two tone paint combo (RPO 65L)

77 colors below. so, the more I look at it, there's no way this truck just had the white changeover with the original main body left intact (but the interior, EVERYTHING is this color as in it sure looks like the original color (SF Tan) even if the exterior parts had a repaint. But neither color is Buckskin or Mahogany, now that I'm looking at it all side by side. So, I guess the remaining question is whether this was a Mahogany truck with a Buckskin insert (like Bvant's, pictured below - but they or may not be mahogany main body, not sure) - or Buckskin truck with a Mahogany insert (can't find a pic of this combo...

Re: Pic Request for factory two tone paint combo (RPO 65L)

Gotcha -

So the model year information makes all the difference -

The Heritage Center documentation shows that you could get a Buckskin Primary and Mahogany inset (I would not have guessed that).

The flip of that was not available (ie, you could not get a Mahogany truck with a Buckskin inset; it had to be Sante Fe Tan).

Two caveats, FWIW -

1) It is really difficult to assess colors from photos on the computer, both because of the color shifts of the digitized photos themselves and then again because of the way they become represented on the computer screen.

2) In the assembly process the inset color was actually sprayed first. It was then masked off in the appropriate shape and the primary color sprayed over the whole truck. Removing the tape and masking reveals the intended two tone.

Not sure if that helps but it might explain some of the overspray or layering patterns that you are seeing.

Re: Pic Request for factory two tone paint combo (RPO 65L)

got it Keith, thanks very much. So a Buckskin truck with a Mahogany inset. Woulda been a beaut originally. Any idea why there's an L on the combo code with the 65 rather than the 76? Thanks again.

No; that's the only part that doesn't make sense to me. Either it's a mistake on the SPID or they coded those slightly differently than the '81 and up.

I didn't start at truck until 1979 so I don't have first hand experience prior to that.
