1988 Chevy Blazer Rear End with 4 Speed Tranny
Guys, another rear end tranny Q, how would a 3.08 6 lug 56 1/2 Backing plate to backing plate work with an original 4 speed Transmission? I want to be able to drive the truck on the highway. Has a 1955 235 full compression engine.

what trans and tire size are you going to use?

16 Inch original rims and I haven't decided on tires. I'm thinking tall thin ones. Not looking for a hot rod but something we can drive on highway. SM420 4 speed

rim size won't have an effect on it...I added a rpm calculator to my above reply..you can enter all your info in it and it'll give you highway engine rpm at whatever cruise speed you want
3.08 gears..27in tall tire...1.1 final trans gear...65mph..=2491 rpm at 65mph...and so forth Last edited by mongocanfly; 08-17-2017 at 06:33 PM. |

why do people talk about backing plate to backing plate? it's meaning less, what counts is axle face to axle face. Or better, wheel mounting surface to wheel mounting surface.
that 56.5 is going to end up near 62.5. Really need more like 60". |

The original 16" tires for our trucks were about 29" diameter. In my truck, 65 mph = 2700 rpm. That's not really too high all though folks today think it sounds like it's screaming. Using a 3.08 rear would lower final drive and engine speed by about 22%. With a 215/75R16 tire that would place your engine speed at 65 mph almost directly at torque peak. That would make a reasonably good highway cruiser but I don't know if the in-town acceleration would be acceptable. I'd probably install the rear but be prepared for a 3.23 or 3.36 gearset in the future.
