I posted a request last week on removing the GMC letters on my 71 but no response ? Can someone Please tell me the size nut holding the letters in place ? I bought a set of deep well 1/4 in sockets and not one fit ?

Re: GMC Hood Letters "HELP" !

That's strange. My '69 Chevy requires a 3/8" socket. Is it possible someone used metric nuts?

Re: GMC Hood Letters "HELP" !

Look up inside the hole in the back panel of the front of the hood...dont be surprised if there are no nuts there...I have seen these letters glued back on several times...

The nuts if they are there are either 3/8 or 5/16...10mm or 8mm for you metric lot...

Re: GMC Hood Letters "HELP" !

I believe my truck had 3/8 nuts. They were the small hat shaped nuts that a socket sometimes has a hard time sitting down on, or a wrench also.

Re: GMC Hood Letters "HELP" !

These hat nuts are a variety of sizes...3/8, 11/32, 5/16, 1/4...even found some as small as 3/16...

Bobs Chevy actually lists the 3/16 online...

http://www.bobschevytrucks.com/1947-...8-gm316-8.html

You should be able to look up into the back plate hole and see the hat nut....

If there are no nuts, the letters have most likely been glued on...

So true, so true...

My wife thinks I have shares in most tool suppliers and big box hardware stores...

Calls my little shed "our own big box store"...

If you need the tool, ya need it...

Re: GMC Hood Letters "HELP" !

The one letter that was still on my GMC hood was held on with speed nuts. Those miserable little stamped steel nuts that round off if you sneeze too close. Six point sockets are a must for them. If someone has messed with them in the past it could have metric ones on them. I have also ran across where back in the day it was common for a body shop to hold emblems on just with some globs of bondo instead of nuts. The people who did that on emblems only seem to have done it on emblems that are impossible to see the back of. Those people seem to be unaware there is a special place in hell for them.

Re: GMC Hood Letters "HELP" !

Solved ! 3/8th deep well socket, 1/4 in drive plus swivel, patience, contortions, time = success !
