Removing the 350 engine from my 72

I am close to pulling the 350 from my 72, and am confused at the steps as listed in the Service Manual. On page 6-27, step 10 it says for CE10-30 for vehicles with auto transmission to remove rear mount crossmember, raise engine and transmission assembly and pull forward until removed.

Do I have to pull the transmission attached to the engine? I've done Pontiac 400s and 455s and you just unbolt the torque convertor/flexplate and remove the bolts holding the transmission to the engine and pull the engine, and just support the transmission..

Can I do the same with this?

Your choice really...depends if the front clip is still in place...

I am assuming you have drained the coolant and removed at least the radiator, fan and electricals etc...

If applicable, AC compressor can be removed from engine only and tied back so you dont lose your charge.

Remove the convertor bolts, push the convertor back into the trans and I usually wire the convertor back so it doesnt fall out.

Remove the distributor cap and rotor and leads...mainly for safety...you dont want to break them.

Remove the exhaust pipes and remove the center bolts from both front engine mounts...

Remove the top two bolts from transmission to engine only...

Lift the engine and trans to clear the mount brackets and place a support under the transmission.

Now remove the remaining four trans to engine bolts...

Lift the engine up slightly and move forward and out of the chassis.

You don't have to remove the engine and transmission as one. Just support the transmission by the pan and leave it bolted to the cross member. Unbolt the bellhousing and flex plate bolts and yard the engine out.

Thanks guys, that is exactly like any other engine I have removed. I was just surprised that the manual doesn't say that. It is confusing to say the least, but in the end, no different than other engines I have pulled in the past.

I like to pull transmissions with engines. I think it is easier to get them re-attached outside the vehicle. The 67-71 mounts are harder, but even 72 up style mounts make it difficult IMHO to get the transmission remated to the engine in the truck. Manuals are harder than automatics, but getting the angle just right can be a pain on either. If you have a good lift, I would pull them together.

Your truck is gorgeous and it's painted one of my favorite color combos. Ok so your pulling the engine, how about the "Paul Harvey " you know, the rest of the story. Are you rebuilding the original, putting in a crate or LS or ????

Don't forget to undo the dipstick tube

I bought a crate engine. ho70, are you referring to the transmission dipstick? I have not disconnected it yet. Is it attached to the engine or the tranny case on a 72 350 thm? My transmission was completely rebuilt a few months back so there is no reason to pull it from the truck.

Already Gone, the color is Meadow Green & White, although I hear a lot of guys call it Medium Green. I think that comes from the fact that it is often abbreviated to Med. Green. The DuPont color chart has it as Med. Green, but the 72 Chevy brochure has it as Meadow Green.

The trans dipstick tube attaches thru one of the engine to trans bolts...it can stay in the trans...

Just watch you dont bend it by bumping it with that lil ol mouse...

I always pull the hood & remove engine & tranny together. good time to go thru the tranny
