where the side emblems are, underneath them is a little piece of metal in
a recess. looks spot welded on. my question is its surface rusted in there. should I try and remove it to blast underneath. looks like a reinforcement for the emblem

Those are rivets that go though to the support on the inside and hold the hood together.
If you take it apart you have to figure out how you are going to put it back together and keep it together.

so what to do. sand blast and triple coat the crap out of it with rust bullet
and hope for the best

How old are you? How long do you expect to live? How long will it take for that spot to rust through?

So many guys building cars that will outlive themselves. The older I get, the more I realize it's not necessary to make repairs to a car that will last 100 years. "Stainless is forever" one company advertises. Maybe, but we're not.

good point. not worried about rust through. just that pesty little rusty water stain running down later on

I'm not saying don't take it apart and do the sand blasting, sealing to prevent rust and what not. What I am saying is that those plates absolutely have to be there with the fasteners to hold the skin to the brace or your hood spreads apart or comes apart. I doubt one out of 500 guys goes to the trouble to take the hood all apart and clean and seal every component though. Maybe not one in 5000.

I think you use epoxy primer, or POR, or Rust Bullet like was suggested above, you will be fine. It should seal in whatever rust is in there.

I'll probably hit mine with a little phosphoric acid (which is what's in the POR-15 prep-spray) before I epoxy over it...if I ever get there.

I've had this same thought though.

My ongoing truck projects: 48 Chev 3100 that will run a 292 Six. 71 GMC 2500 that is getting a Cad 500 transplant. 77 C 30 dualie, 454, 4 speed with a 10 foot flatbed and hoist. It does the heavy work and hauls the projects around.
