Its actually on my S10 not the 72'. I have ordered one and am wondering how far back from the trans tail should I put it?

I guess it really doesn't matter. I'd put it far enough back so that it does it's job; keeping your driveshaft from flinging all over creation if a u-joint let loose, but I wouldn't put it back so far that when your suspension compressed, the shaft hit on the housing. I'd probably go 2-3 feet past the end of the tranny; wherever you have a good spot for installation in that area. Just my $0.02 though....

If you are going to any tracks where it will be inspected, it needs to be within 6 inches of the front u-joint.

According to "dragstrip rules", the saftey loop should be no more than 6" from the center of the front u joint. On my longhorn, i run 2 loops for the 2 pc shaft....crazyL

Why is it 6"? Is it safer, better, etc?

You are supposed to put the loop near the tranny so that if your front u-joint says "no more" and breaks, then your drive shaft can't drop down and hit the track and drag/bend/grab/pogo your vehicle. If the rear one breaks, it's not as big a deal because it can just drag. Think of it this way... Take a rake (or something to the effect) and drag it behind you, then try to 'push' the rake. It is soooo much harder to push. Same idea with your driveshaft. You don't want it to grab a piece of track and launch the rear (or rip it out) of your vehicle.

I've seen the aftermath of a POS mustang that got launched like that. Flipped end over end and landed on the hood/windshield.
Wasn't pretty...even on a ford.
