Firewall insulation pads

I am replacing my firewall insulation pads and bought a set, but the insulation on the new pad is very thin I think less then half the original thickness, Picture has new pad laying against the old one, anyone have a good source for good quality pads, or it this What we have to use.

The jute padding (carpet padding) comes in different weights ,If I remember 40 OZ being the heaviest and my local material supplier carries it in black , Check with your local interior shop they probably have the tan color in stock .

I bought the pads that include the cardboard and jute is already glued on I am not sure the jute would come off now without destroying the cardboard, I was hoping maybe someone made a better kit with the thicker jute.

It will peel off . you just cut some new pieces to glue back on . I bought some last year that did come with the thick jute I'll look and see where they came from .

What's the front of the new cardboard look like? Smooth like OEM or textured? There are two available repro firewall insulation pads. One is cheap and doesn't resemble OEM - I just got a set of this from one of our board vendors and will not be using it. The other reproduction is USA made and much closer to OEM (or used to be) - I ordered a set from another board vendor and should have it next week to confirm. The example I bought for my k20 build several years ago was close to OEM.

Funny you should mention the texture, I also bought these from a board member because they have been known to sell better quality repro stuff, but the cardboard for the drivers side is like a semi gloss black with a little texture to it the center one is like flat black almost a blue color with no texture. Both have the thin jute the drivers side they didn't line up the jute so it is off set with the holes and on the center one they put their sticker which looks like an address label and when I tried to carefully peeled it off it took some of the cardboard with it. It looks to be very poor quality and no way I am using them. Please keep me posted when you get yours would like to find thicker ones.

I ripped the jute backing off and used the 1/2" dynaliner . Worked perfectly

Did they have the AC version for the passenger side?

I use the Dynaliner 1/2" thick. its closed cell foam and self adhesive, easy to install.
You will need to use your old insulation for a pattern.

Does Dynamat have a factory style reproduction? As that is what I believe we are looking for. (At least I am.)

Dynaliner is non absorbent closed cell foam, Pre glued with peel and stick adhesive., it wont hold in moisture to rust.
You will have to use your old material for a pattern or borrow a set to make a pattern.

Wes at Classic Heartbeat sells from a manufacturer that get's it pretty close and he has the rubber plugs to secure the pads to the firewall - all USA made I believe. Here's the link to his website, scroll down for the insulation: http://www.classicheartbeat.com/Interior.htm

I may be wrong, but am recalling that AC-equipped cabs don't have insulation on the firewall for the passenger side about the box. There is insulation higher up inside the dash that runs the length of the dash.
