Anyone have their spare tire in the cab?

Now that my tank is out of the cab I'm thinking of getting a temp spare tire to put behind the seat. I'm thinking that a thin one that is not too tall would work. Anyone doing it?

unless you are very extremely short... it will never fit
even the little people run with the seat all the way back

Re: Anyone have their spare tire in the cab?

I have the skinny spare out of my dad's old 84 Olds Delta 88 4 door that I have carried off an on for years as my spare. It has a double bolt pattern for either 5 on 4-3/4 or 5 on 5. It's got me home more than once but is probably due for a new and rather spendy tire now. One of the reasons I am stretching my cab is to be able to put the spare behind the seat.

Re: Anyone have their spare tire in the cab?

its too bad they didnt put a big box behind the cab to carry things like spare tires and even the occasional lumber :P

just kidding of course, have you looked into using a crank down spare holder under the back of the bed? most newer gm have them, easy to just pop that crossmember in and viola, a spare under the bed when you need it

I always thought of using a crank down tire holder from a Chevy van but now my gas tank is in the back. I think I'm going to measure the space behind the seat and see how much room there is, and then see if there is a thin short temp tire that will fit there. I just want something that would get me home or to a tire place. It concerns me to not have a spare tire, jack, and lug wrench. I have disk brakes so getting one to fit over the calipers might limit my choices. I'm not tall, but I do keep the seat all the way to the rear.

Re: Anyone have their spare tire in the cab?

I'm going to give this a try. I have an under bed gas tank and a big void behind the seat of my '53. I carry a 215/70-14 as a "space saver spare" and it may fit back there.

Tried it. Does not work in an AD truck.

Re: Anyone have their spare tire in the cab?

very simple. put a tire bucket in the floor behind seat perpendicular to frame.
between driveshaft and outer frame. this allows the tire to go down and clear seat. you will still have to use one of those temp spares

Re: Anyone have their spare tire in the cab?

Must be a boring day in Texas to answer a two year dead thread.
Xaircav (hey I am one of those A-1/9 scout 1968) hit the same thing that I have, gas tank in the back and I am tired of carrying the spare in the bed. I don't think the spare I have is big enough to need a tire well though.

I have plenty of room for my "spare tire" behind the seat:

Re: Anyone have their spare tire in the cab?

I have found a space saver spare tire with overall outside diameter that is 8% smaller than my rear tires. Is this OK to use with a posi rear end?

Thanks.

Can't wait for experts to weigh in on this. Many of us have staggered front/rear tire sizes but can only carry one spare. I would assume for emergency use and short distances it wouldn't hurt anything.

If your rear is a posi or locker of some kind you need the same diameter on the rear on both sides. Drive very far on different sizes could hurt the rear.

yes, ive done it in my 49 works great . seat can go all the way back. sorry I don't know how to post pics. you just sit your tire behind the seat, cut a rectangular hole in the floor so it will drop down, then fab you a half or quarter circle box and weld it in, theres plenty of room between driveshaft and outer frame. I did mine on the pass side

Re: Anyone have their spare tire in the cab?

I have to have a spare, not having one gives me the whillies. I even have one under the trailer. But todays compressors and flat repair kits that many late model cars have are pretty hard to beat. https://www.ebay.com/itm/Fix-A-Flat-...AAAOSwvTpaIZON

I actually have a few of them. In my family mini van we were headed up to Oregon (500 miles away) and the second day I woke up and looked out at the van to see that the right rear tire was flat. I filled it with this compressor then drove it to a tire shop to be properly repaired. So even just the compressor has came in handy.

Re: Anyone have their spare tire in the cab?

I have a kit out of a newer Volvo that has a air pump that you screw a cannister of fix a flat stuff on to compressor and plug it in. Hope the hole is small enough. then I have AAA.

Any other thoughts on how much different the diameter of the spare tire can be compared to the diameter of the regular tires (which on my truck are different front to rear, although I guess a different size on the front of a 2WD won't matter).

Re: Anyone have their spare tire in the cab?

Thanks Jackson for waking this thread up. Since I posted it I have spent $600 to purchase a factory spare tire kit with jack and lug wrench for my Cadillac. I had totally forgotten about that 12V compressor and can of gook that came with the car, but I guess for now that will be my truck spare tire substitute.

Well... Yes. No. Maybe.

8% is fairly substantial. For a 31" tire an 8% smaller tire is about 28.5". If you have a typical flat plate type posi with constant spring pressure this would cause some wear as you drive. So the question might be better asked "How long is this OK to use with a posi rear-end?" I would expect that a 200 -300 mi drive at 80 degrees and 65-70 mph is likely to be ok. Now a trip across country? Probably not a great idea.

OK, thanks. We will have to hope that any flat tires are on the front.
Not planning to drive cross country on a temporary spare anyway, so that should be ok. Just looking to get home or to a tire shop.

And three of my current vehicles have no spare tire at all, but my wife says she wants to drive the truck some, so a spare tire would be good. Not that she would change it mind you, but she likes the security and she could get someone to change it for her.

i'd have a spare at the house ready to go if she calls you
even a mile with mismatched tires on a posi rearend would toast the clutches
