swb driveshaft length

Would anyone know the the correct length of a swb 72c10 driveshaft, thanks for any help.

Not off the top of my head, but I want to say 55.5" ,that is for my sbc in the front V-8 POSISTION with a 4l60 trans . What transmission you have determines what length you need JFYI

Thanks for the reply, I have a Saginaw 3 speed. The truck is a long wheel base at present,thats why I'm seeking this info. Thanks again

I took 11 1/2" out of my two piece driveshaft. It was easier than building a one piece and alot cheaper since I did it myself. If you retain the 3 spd then you are as well off waiting til you get the truck shortened and measure. That will insure you wont have to build one on a guess. If you go with a mainstream auto transmission, then you may get lucky and find one in an old junkyard.

Thanks for the reply, I'm kind of leaning in the direction you suggested. I think it would be better to get rid of the carrier bearing if I could.

I stopped by my local drive line shop the other day to ask if it is better to have one piece or two. with all the experience they had, they recommended a single piece shaft, as long as you have room for the larger diameter.

They had given me the directions to measure for my application.
- with the yolk installed into the trans, pull it out 3/4" - 1".
- measure from the center of where the U-Joint will be on the Yolk to the center of where the center of the U-Joint on the Pinion will be. This is to be done at ride height if you have changed yours from stock.
- Bring them the info and pick up the new shaft the next day or two.

** They will need to know if you have a powerful Engine that they need to beef up the shaft for you as well.

When you say ride height , you are talking about that the truck needs to be sitting on all four tires under the weight of the truck not on jack stands , this is the biggest mistake people make when they measure there drive line. from what my Drive line shop tells me anyhow.


A shortbed with the 3 spd saginaw drive shaft is 55 inches in lenth from center of U joint to center of Ujoint

A Short bed with a TH 350 or a 200 4r is 58.5 inches in lenth center of U joint to center of U Joint .

I can get you the lenth for a TH400 also I just would need to get under my 69 let me know if you need that

But I would still wait till you are ready and take the ruler to it your self...
