4L80E in limp mode
I bought an 03 Savana 3500 for the 6.0l/4l80e combo and the engine will crank and run great but the transmission won't shift and appears to be in limp mode. I don't have a gage panel to see if I have a check engine light and of course I can't find my code reader. What are the things I need to be checking? Don't want to spend much on van parts, I just want to see the tranny shift out once before I transplant it into my truck.

Re: 4L80E in limp mode
Troubleshooting an electronic trans without knowing that its actually in Limp, and why, is throwing parts down a hallway. You can check the real easy stuff (plug on the side of the trans, pinched wires, low on fluid), but there's no real way to point your energy without knowing what is causing the limp mode.
There are also a few non-trans causes of going into protection also.

Make sure you have power and ground running to it. I had a problem and the pins where unclipped from the plug. I locked them back in place and solved my problems. I would look at the plug first before you do anything. It solved all my problems. Its an easy fix before you get into major stuff.
