hood letters with broken posts

After painting the hood, I have three chevrolet hood letters with broken posts. The long post on these three is too short to hold a nut. Anyone with any suggestions for how to makee these stay on? The legs are long enough to fit in the holes, so I am considering filling the holes with epoxy or Jb weld then pressing the letters on. Cant imagine there is anyway to make new posts on the pot metal letters.

If the backs of the letters are pretty flat there's 3M trim adhesive tape (double sided tape really) that works well and is available at any auto parts store. The stuff is pretty thin and sticks well, just be sure to use a really sharp razor blade or Xacto knife to cut it.

There's nothing wrong with your epoxy/JB Weld idea either. My suggestion for that though would be to rough up the ends of the posts. Put a little epoxy/JB in the hole, stick the letter in and dab a glob on the backside where the nut would go to help prevent pullout.

I guess the 4th rate painter my dad hired to paint up my truck in 1990 broke the studs off the "Custom/10" emblems. I remember dad gluing those back on with some black stuff he had back then. It held those on until I removed them during my rebuild. I expect you could get it from an auto parts store.

Frankly, I'd replace the letters. Try the parts forum.

x2 for the double sided tape. We use that all the time at work for body side moldings and emblems on my current project. If you use an adhesive promoter first you will rip the tape before it will let go.

I suspect this was 3M emblem adhesive.

If there is enough post to go in the hole, they make a retainer that snaps in then the emblem is pushed into that. It allows the emblems to be removed as well without having to get to the back. Don't remember what they are called, but a few minutes with the all knowing Google should turn something up.

We always called them a "barrel clip".

We could repair a wrong fender emblem in the assembly plant by removing the incorrect emblem by hitting it with a hammer, shearing the pins. Push in a barrel clip (or two) and install the correct emblem.

Done - all without having to access the back side of the panel.

thanks for the barrel clip suggestion. I found a paint shop with clips that are placed in the hole from outside the hood, then the letter tapped home with the little clip forming a wedge to hold the broken post in place. Seems tight.
