89 Suburban steering box leak
Just curious what the consensus around here is about the steering boxs on these trucks. I know in the older trucks the rebuilt units can be junk, so what's my best option for fixing my leaky box?
PS: it's leaking around pitman arm shaft, and end seals.

Re: 89 Suburban steering box leak
I don't know about the current rebuilds, but I got an AutoZone rebuilt box about 10 years ago and it worked fine and is still working. There is a big core charge for a rebuilt box. I think I was only out of pocket about $20 when I turned in my original box on a rebuilt one.

Re: 89 Suburban steering box leak
I see for my 83 C20 the box is $152 with a limited lifetime warranty, with a $90 core charge, but 20% off if you buy online and ship to home. You might wait until they have 20% off and free shipping. I think black Friday weekend coming up next month might be a good time to buy. You can google "black friday auto parts deals" about a week before Thanksgiving and search for the auto parts stores. I usually buy my oil and anti-freeze at that time for $1-$2 per container (sometimes free.)

Re: 89 Suburban steering box leak
Didn't end up replacing the box, the leak slowed for some reason and no longer leaves marks in the driveway.
Good tip on the buying online. I do this with Advance. They always have a 20-30% off coupon floating around.
